Jones beating Hopkins is probably the best win any of them ever managed. He also dominated another modern great 12-0 and won a heavyweight belt.

Nothing laughable about it, really. Plus, bottom line, he's Roy fucking Jones.

There have only really been 10 or 11 solid decades of modern boxing. Roy was far and away the best in one of them.

If Jones is better than a lightweight Whitaker it isn't by far and away. (or even a late 90s Hopkins or 130lb Floyd, limiting it purely to 90s fighters).

Whitaker was at least as good as Jones Jr, if not better.

Negative. Jones was Whitaker with more handspeed and power.

 

Jones Jr's had the superior handspeed and power, but his technique was not on a level with Whitaker's, nor were their styles remotely similar. RJJ used his speed to stay on the outside and potshot, Whitaker stood right in front of guys and made them miss all day long.

 

Nevertheless they received the same results, defensively.

Not saying the styles were similar, I'm saying that Roy had the same equivalent abilities PLUS handspeed and power.

 

Roy's defense was not on the level of Sweet Pea.

 

Whitaker was superior, but there's no shame in that for Jones.

Style wise Pernel wouldn't have had it so easy with a Toney since Jones-Toney was a once a decade Hearns-Duran type style car crash. But ultimately he would have won clearly because he was better. The young Hopkins Jones fought couldn't have beaten sweet pea p4p. No chance.

 

Bernard Hopkins, circa-1994, is an over-rated beast. Certainly, I would not have him in the same class as the prime Barrera or Marquez, both of whom Pacquiao bested.

 

I agree that Toney, pound-for-pound, is not an easy fight for Whitaker. Toney was pretty horribly drained for his fight with Jones, though. Like with Taylor beating up on McGirt, I don't think the drained fighter would've changed the outcome had they been in top-shape, but still it persist as a legitimate issue.

I will say Jones would always beat Toney more easily than Whitaker could (if they were the same size), though I don't for a minute believe it owes to Jones being Whitaker's superior. He certainly never proved that.

 

My eyes keep telling me Jones is the best fighter I've ever seen. Blasted eyes!!
