Well actually yeah, the Reid fight did make me think less of Calzaghe as it should have done. It was only later in Joe's career where he proved me wrong and made me realise some of his performances were him fighting to the level of opposition. Just like Victor Ortiz made me think less of him after losing to Maidana, when I previously thought he was the best prospect/contender in boxing. If you're really confident a fighter is going to win, and he loses, I don't see how you can NOT think less of him :dunno: Especially if that's the main thing you have to go by, ie the biggest test of his career. There's no need to write DeGale off, it was only his 11th fight, against a pretty good fighter, but I think there's absolutely no doubt he's not as good as advertised. Even Hut, a big DeGale believer thought DeGale was "exposed" to some extent.
:boohoo: Yeah having a little fun afterwards is what's wrong with boxing fans these days. Seriously you guys are some primaballerinas. I never said deGale was shite. People said it's a mismatch and Groves has no chance so get a grip, you nutjob. @ slice/shake - the betting odds after 12 rounds were in favor of Degale so obviously the fight was close enough that people thought the Warren guy will get the win. I thought he could have - I didn't score round by round but to me also he came across as the aggressor. When he hurt Groves middle of the fight I seriously thought he will turn the fight and stop him late. Groves looked on the decline but DeGale didn't press the action the next round and let him regain his composure - big mistake. Bottom line is he was too fucking tentative and I don't get why it's not like Groves did an awful lot to hurt and frustrate James...
I agree actually mate. I thought that was it after round 9, James was gonna close the show. Puzzling why he didn't. He lost it more than Groves won it IMO.
You have to take it in context when there's clear emotional involvement, as there also was with Calzaghe and Reid. The thing is, I thought Calzaghe lost and DeGale won, but the end result was the same, neither were diminished in my eyes. I think it's mightily unfair to say he wasn't as good as advertised, Groves was certainly better than advertised, but the deficiencies in Chunkys gameplan and technique are easily rectified with the right coach. There is a shitload of potential there still, and in that sense he hasn't been diminished. I might have overrated his stage of development but not his talent.
So? Calzaghe has broken his hand plenty of times and won alot more convincingly than he did that night
Chunky hurt Groves a hell of alot more than Groves hurt Chunky. I can't remember chunky being hurt in the slightest.
I don't think either were hurt to be honest. Groves was a bit shaky in the 9th, and I think if DeGale had fought him like that every round from the off he would have stopped him late, but he didn't, he gave it away
