I think he is the best of all time. His accomplishments are incredible, plus I would pick the late 70's Duran over any fighter in history, P4P.

He is absurdly underrated on FightBeat, as much as I love it. It has a crazy amount of Duran haters.

However LG, you're a good poster, but you seemed better when you were more of a newbie ;)

You need to lay off the Pacquiao hate because it's just a bit boring and tedious, and transparent. You don't even believe the stuff you write about Manny.

No different to guys like Double L who feel the need to unleash Floyd hate on every thread etc. Just kind of boring.

It's BACKLASH Attributed to the Duran FANS on this Site, Brother Mex...You Guys have BUILT-IN EXCUSES for EVERY SINGLE Duran Loss...

Hearns Wipes his Ass w/Duran, yet Ya'll GLOSS it Over...Nevermind that Duran Looked GREAT in Disposing of Cuevas AND Davey Moore 2-3 Fights PRIOR AND Came Dangerously Close (On the SCORECARDS Anyways) to BEATING Marvin Hagler, 1 Fight Prior...Not to Mention, Duran Went On to Beat Barkley SEVERAL Bouts Later...

He was "Out of Shape" vs. DeJesus, Apparently...Benitez Absolutely SCHOOLED him, but that's Glossed Over Too...

& Then the Whole Way Ya'll ABSOLVE Duran from Absolutely THE MOST UNCONSCIONABLE QUITJOB in Boxing History...There's NOfuckingWAY U Can Hoist Duran Up on a Pedastal as the Ultimate Fighting Machine, the "Greatest Fighter of All Time" or Whatever, yet EXCUSE him for QUITTING for Leonard...Despite Brother Hut's "Ring" Issues w/that Fight, "the Greatest Fighter of All Time" Would FIND A WAY to PERSEVERE, Regardless...CUT the Fucking Ring Off...Take Advantage of the FEW Early Rounds Clinches by BANGING Leonard to the Body...

But Not Only do U Guys EXCUSE him for QUITTING, U Also Play the "Out of Shape" Card YET AGAIN...Sorry, but Duran KNEW Leonard had a Rematch Clause & he KNEW Leonard would EXERCISE it...On Top of All that, Duran Could've VERY EASITLY Gotten "Cut" in Sparring, "Hurt" his Hand or ANYTHING...The Bottom Line is, Duran WENT THRU w/the Fight Because he THOUGHT he Could Win It...

    Then he QUIT....

NO Fighter has His Losses Held Against Him LESS than Duran Does...He's Top 3-5 for CERTAIN, but it's Still CRAZY how Guys like You, Hut & Loaded Gloves FAWN Over him...It's NO Different than REED was in his "Planet Roy" Days, to B Honest...

a good argument for that could be made, REED

but one for putting him 6-10 could also be made on the basis of some of the things you mentioned in your previous post

Most of us have a built in excuse for very one of Jones' losses too. Excuses, excuses. Just sayin'.

Hey REED, fair comments, but - bare with me here - I honestly think in Duran's case it's far more justified than most

To a non Duran fan it might just seem like excuse making, but if you're objective about it, most of the excuses are actually just the truth.

Look at Roy, as you probably know REED, I've always been a Roy admirer, but not a proper Roy fan.

But for Roy's losses there are also excuses, and IMO also legit.

With Griffin I think he just took him lightly or had an off night, plus of course Griffin worked that DQ, he was clearly acting, and Roy got revenge.

For Tarver the excuse is more clear cut, he weakened himself like crazy cutting that muscle after fighting at heavyweight.

I can see that objectively, and I'm not even a Roy fan. It doesn't annoy me that Roy fans use those excuses, because they are pretty legit.

    Same as MOST of Duran's.

If you've noticed, I don't generally excuse losses of my favourite fighters, I mean you win some you lose some.

Despite Leonard's gay tactics I've never really tried to justify that quit job. He shouldn't have quit, simple as that, it was pretty insane that he just decided to do that.

I also don't excuse the loss (in his prime no less) to DeJesus.

DeJesus was a very good fighter, and he just got the better of Duran that night. Truth be told Duran didn't look awful or out of shape, he didn't look his absolute best, but he didn't look bad either. DeJesus just fought really well and beat him fair and square. Duran had improved by the rematch and was obviously more acquainted with DeJesus's style.

The other losses though, MOST of them anyway, do have legit excuses.

Once Duran hit WW he became a very up and down fighter. Sometimes he would look like he was just going through the motions, and that's why he lost to average fighters.

Against Hearns he looked like he didn't even want to be there. Plus he looked way undersized and Hearns was just an AWFUL style matchup for Duran.

And in the rematch with Ray, if you look at it objectively, you can see that aint the same guy from Montreal or even close.

He partied and blew up after that epic win, that's common knowledge. He looked less motivated and more soft and sluggish, and yet it was STILL a pretty close fight.

I agree with you that's Duran's fault. No doubt. He was an elite professional fighter, he should have been more disciplined between fights, he should have taken the rematch just as seriously as the first fight. That's his problem and why he lost, it's just that it's more of a reflection of his mentality as a fighter rather than his ability.

Same with Roy and Griffin for example. He took Griffin lightly, made a stupid mistake and paid the price.

But a loss is a loss, and that's a fucking hardcore loss that gave Duran a huge stigma to carry around.

The thing with Duran is ALL his losses apart from DeJesus came out of his real weightclass and generally past his prime too.

Which again is not much different from Roy. I don't hold any of Roy's post Tarver losses against him, even though they'll negatively affect his historical ranking, and for different but equally valid reasons, I don't hold most of Duran's losses against him.
