As i've been off sick the last couple days i've watched a few boxing movies and this is another one of them.

Were you impressed with Smith's acting, portraying Ali?

Were the fight scenes vs Liston, Frazier and Foreman accurate and performed well iyo to the actual fights?

Was the film overall accurate to real life incidences iyo?

    Discuss.

REED Absolutely Looooooooooooved Smith's Portrayal in 'Ali'...He LOOKED the Part & Talked SIMILARLY to Ali, w/Out MIMICKING him...Smith Actually Used HIS OWN Speaking Voice...

"Ali" Stayed Reasonably CLOSE to the Vest, In Terms of HOW the Fights Played Out...Michael Bentt LOOKED LIKE & WORE what Sonny Liston Wore...Ditto for James Toney as Joe Frazier & Charles Shufford as George Foreman...

REED's ONLY Complaint was that Some of Ali's More Memorable Quotes were Plugged Into Scenes & Instances where he DIDN'T Really Say Them...It would Take about 3 Motion Pictures to FULLY CAPTURE Muhammad Ali's Life, but REED Gives the Will Smith "Ali" Flick a B +/A -...

I had no problem with Smith's portrayal of Ali, acting or the fight choreography. The script, however, was utter shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They didn't talk about how Ali used to accurately predict many outcomes of his early fights. Didn't go into why he was such an underdog against Liston (by bringing in the Henry Cooper fight for example). They didn't mention the fact that his style and abilities were so unusual for a Heavyweight (dancing like a Welterweight etc). No emphasis of his post layoff diminished skills and stamina (VERY important part of Ali's story). Didn't hype up the 1st Frazier fight. Didn't really show why the Foreman fight seemed like such an impossible mountain for him to climb.

Basically whoever wrote the script and whoever approved it...need to be boiled in oil.

I thought Smith played Ali about as well as anybody could, but he still was kind of a shadow of the real Ali and his charisma. I guess Ali is an impossible role to master to anyone.

I liked the boxing scenes but somehow the movie was only medicore overall. As reed said above, you would need a film series to cover everything, I didn't like all the choices made by the writer

I really enjoyed the movie. I thought Smith was excellent as Ali. Smith actually looked quite good in the ring and got himself in excellent shape for the part.

Which other actor could have performed the role better than Smith? I can't think of anyone.

As I said, probably noone, but even the best actor for the role can't match the original.

It would have to be a no name actor. None of the current famous crop could have done a better job than Smith.

The script was SHIT though. SHIT SHIT SHIT!!!!!!!

It was alright. One thing I liked was that Bentt, Toney and Shufford actually looked like their parts.

I liked it a lot. Will Smith actually played the role low key, which was probably safer then trying to match Ali's charisma and over-acting like Cuba Gooding Jr. would have done.

I loved the Michael Mann touch to the movie.........the soundtrack, the cinematography and the whole atmosphere of the film. The boxing choreography was also top notch..........something very few boxing films ever get right.

I wasn't expecting a documentary, so minor inaccuracies and lack of specific details in a biopic covering 12 years or so in the life of a very prominent icon, have very little bearing on my judgement of this film.

Oh..........and anybody who criticizes this film while praising "Rocky Balboa", should be burned alive in a vat of oil for the rest of eternity.

Not saying you can't like both, I'm just sayin'...............:nono:

Yeah Smith done well, I liked his performance. The movie itself was ok, nothing special.

Whoever mentioned Cuba Gooding Jr, he would be perfect to play RJJ in a movie, although I highly doubt that would be made

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure they used the actual footage for that scene.

I loved Smith's performance and the film is the type that seems average at first but gets better the more you see it.

Doh, I was wrong. Could have sworn they replaced that with actual footage.

No one is addressing the points I made in this thread?

The script was SHIT!!!! How can the writers choose to leave out the important things I mentioned and focus on silly shit like his affairs and his sadness of Malcolm X's death etc...not to mention the drawn out scenes of him training in Zaire.

Script was fine. The Zaire stuff was the best part of the movie.

Writer has to make choices and neglect some important stuff to display other. It is like choosing ten songs to a Beatles Greatest Hits: it will never atisfy everyone. I didn't like all things about the script either but it wasn't THAT bad

    That's good stuff.

The movie was well done, imo. However as others have mentioned, Will Smith can't hold a candle to the real thing and I have been so familiar with the Ali story that I was simply bored to death by the whole movie.

Not the movie's fault, I had just seen it all 50 times before.

The movie was crap. Smith was crap.

I thought Jamie Foxx was decent as Bundini and Jeffrey Wright was good as Howard Bingham.

Dunno how he'd go at replicating Jones, but they sure do look alike.

Certainly, I wouldn't be rushing to see such a movie, mind
