Which ones grind your gears, folkes. A few I take particular exception too.,

    "Sonny Liston was a quitter."

"Sonny Listons nickname was, 'The Bear.'

"Kenny Norton could not beat a puncher."

"Muhammad Ali had as much as five minutes in the torn glove fiasco."

"Joe Frazier could not beat a puncher."

& I wont mention any names with this last one, but...

"A clown ring excuses Duran quitting." Not an actual quote, but you know who you are

Sugar Ray Leonard ducked Aaron Pryor: this is probably the most annoying myth. They were in different weight classes, and Leonard offered Pryor a career high payday anyway.

No footage exists of Sugar Ray Robinson at WW
: there are even some fights of him on youtube at WW. The quality is horrible though.

Henry Armstrong almost became the middleweight champion of the world in the draw against Ceferino Garcia
: it was essentially a non-title bout. Only California recognized it as a title bout, and it was just a ten round fight. Basically equivalent to an 8 round bout nowadays (two-thirds of the championship distance).

There was always one title back in the old days
: there's pretty much always been two or more main titles, although there were usually (not always) unified before the 1960s. NYSAC and NBA titles, then the WBC and WBA titles.

Julio Cesar Chavez completely ruined Meldrick Taylor: he took something out of him but Taylor still had enough in the tank to score the 2nd best win of his career a year after losing to Chavez.

Roy Jones was unbeatable in his prime. yeah right. Just no one he fought had the B level talent to hit him on the chin.

Well it certainly belies another myth - Leonard won the rematch due to a strategic boxing masterclass, blah blah blah. No, he won it by fucking STINK :shit:

Impossible to outbox a prime Thomas hearns!

Ray leonard couldn't do it and Benitez couldn't do it.

hearns had height and reach on both of them. Let him try that boxing on a prime Hopkins or Michael Nunn. That would have been the true test.

The worst boxing myth would have to be that Duran is NOT the best fighter ever.

Clearly he is. If you put down the haterade and look objectively, he's simply the best.

ali was 36 and fat in Spinks fight
Roy was weakened by coming down in weight from heavyweight
Hopkins was 100 years old and robbed in the rematch.

NO ONE who gets utterly dominated and annihilated in two short rounds, by anyone, can ever claim to be the GOAT. EVER

The biggest boxing myth is that most boxing fans can tell the difference between an actual "myth" and a valid generalization.

    :nono:

Actual myths: Things that never happened and have absolutely no basis in reality.

Duran never knocked out a horse

Mickey Walker and Harry Greb never got into a bar fight after a boxing match

About 25% of what Nat Fleischer wrote in order to fill in space in his stories.

    Agreed. :kidcool:

I would also say a fighter who lost to Spinks, and got gift decisions against Young and Norton can make no claim at all to being the GOAT.

Duran wasn't completely shot when Hearns sparked him.

Agreed, but 99% of those myths are from the 'olden days'.

For something that never actually happened i'd add "Willy Pep won a round without throwing a punch"

Neither were Ali or Jones or Hopkins against Taylor.

The difference is all those fighters were the same size.

Duran was dwarfed by Hearns. It was akin to Rios Vs Paul Williams.

Love the shot. Duran looks really energetic and ready to FIGHT in the intros too!! Was up against another class of fighter though.

Tyson was robbed in the Douglas fight (Douglas was entitled to follow the referees count, no matter how slow, and Tyson was down for the same amount of time)

Ali was well ahead against Liston in the first fight (it was level)

The time between rounds 4-5 in Ali-Cooper 1

    Groves winning the DeGale fight

This Duran bullshit is flooding all the threads, shut up already you haters!

Oh, and "Ali pulled a miracle comeback against Foreman" - in truth, Ali won 5 out of the 7 completed rounds

Yeah Duran was an A+ fighter while Hearns was just an A...but that 11 inch reach advantage, 6 inch height advantage was a bit too much for a 32 year old Duran...:dancingBaby:add in the stylistic mismatch Hearns couldn't lose...
