http://ringtalk.com/genaro-hernandez-chemotherapy-cancer-el-chickanito A fortnight ago, Genaro told me while appearing on “Ring Talk Worldwide,†that the Cancer was spreading throughout his body. To me, it sounded as if he was ready to throw in the towel. Well, it appears that is now the case as Genaro has suspended all radiation and chemotherapy treatments as the cancer has spread to the point where the battle Genaro is fighting cannot be won. athetic: Never nice to see a good guy eaten alive by that shit. It should have been Margarito.:fartattack:
Saw this. Even in an article like this, Pedro had to be a blowhard about himself ("a writer and orator of my stature") .. that guy really needs to STFU.
I first heard of Genaro when I read about his fight Carlos Hernandez in Boxing Monthly in 1998. Soon after that the Mayweather fight was made and Boxing Monthly did a preview. Floyd Sr was saying that Jr was going to trap Hernandez on the ropes and do him with a single body or head shot and end it there. He added that the Pep fight was perfect preparation for doing a job on Hernandez thanks to the height and build similarities. Floyd had pounded out a wide 12 round decision over Pep. Genaro's brother was saying that Hernandez had suffered hand and wrist injuries and that affected his punching power and that they would see a different Genaro on the night. Floyd stopped him easily in the end and Hernadez discovered a spot of blood on his brain in a scan soon after, and quit.
Hernandez was an underrated champion. The only guy he lost to at his natural weight was Floyd (DLH was 5 lbs up), and that was the last fight of his career.
Yeah he moved up to 135 for the Oscar fight. Looking back at the heat he caught for quitting..... athetic: His nose had been broken by a left uppercut , and in numerous places.
He was basically a junior feather fighting a welter that night. I always say that DLH was a beast at the lower weights, but a lot of that did have something to do with his size advantage.
Yeah Oscar would have been cutting weight.....it may have been the right uppercut. <iframe width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/PSnz-ygJBww" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
He did receive a lot of criticism, and rightfully so for quitting in that fight. I wish him well, and when all is said and done; he will be remembered as a very good fighter. One of the nice guys in boxing who helped others less fortunate than he.
Agree. Genaro sort of had his Vitali redemption moment when he could have won a fight against Azumah for an illegal blow, but continued on. The fight was permitted to be halted for over 5 minutes which is against the rules, but nobody cared.
I don't think he was wrong to quit. His nose was shattered. That affects your breathing and its painful as hell anyways, not to mention getting busted on it again and again. He prolonged his career. Its a pity- he made the right decisions all along, right to keep fighting vs Azumah, right to quit vs Oscar, right to retire when the brain scan showed up a problem. Then he gets cancer. Fuck that.
Supposedly, Shane had broken Genaro's nose in sparring, I think. Quitting for a broken nose is quitting. I try to be very sympathetic to fighters who quit in a fight, but not for that reason. Plus, I thought Genaro won the round before he quit.
I agree, I don't have a problem with a fighter quitting when he's taking a beating. But for a broken nose ??? It's a bullshit reason imo. Sure it's painfull, but it doesn't affect you long term health.
Pity. We all gotta go though. I wonder will Floyd have something nice to say about him, he was after all Floyds first title shot.
according to iole: Classy classy move by @FloydMayweather He is paying ALL costs for funeral of the late great champion Genaro Hernandez. Great move #boxing
