I was reading up on Tony a bit, this dude has a nice wrestling background. With his striking talent, he is a legit MMA fighter. I am very impressed. (wished I would have looked it up before making my picks)

Pettis is what I thought he was, very good for WEC, very average for the UFC.

Pettis is a star. Don't hate.

Just watched this last night. I had never seen Pettis before and even though he lost I would like to see a lot more of him.

Guida has to be on something. He has inhuman energy and even talks a mile a minute.

Pettis off his back is something great to watch. Guida is just crazy. The way to beat him is on standup. Pettis should have used his kicks more.

We already saw him lose 3 rounds to a middle of the pack LW. Pettis is exactly what I thought he was. He's an exciting fighter that really wasn't ready for Maynard or Edgar.

Those highlight reel kicks are fun to watch, but they will typically result in take downs at the highest level.

I find it hard to believe that people still think Pettis deserve to be mentioned with Edgar, Maynard, Melendez, Aoki, or Alvarez at this point. He was just clearly beaten by Clay Guida, who I don't even rank as highly as Jim Miller or Evan Dunham.

I would love to see Pettis versus Siver, Sotiropolous or Guillard. Those could be fun fights. Personally I think they would be pick-em fights. But matches with Siver or Guillard would be fun stand up wars.

And get taken down even more easily? Even his corner told him to limit his kicks because of the take downs.

Pettis is active off his back for sure but it wasn't like the Torres fight where he should have won off his back. Clay completely controlled him.

His corner was stupid. He should have used low kicks. Low kicks and pull them quick. It would force clay to have to reach for those legs. Which would expose his head for punches. Also, you do enough low kicks to clay where he is thinking about the low kick all the time and then start faking the low kick and come up with the high kick. Him reaching for the low kick will expose that head for those high kicks along with punches. Pettis trying to take clay's head off was foolish.

I dont put pettis in that group with Edgar, Maynard, etc.

But i see him doing a lot of improving. That is why i said you will see.

i thought pettis' takedown defense was solid vs. henderson, but guida's aggression is on another level.

he's only 23, so it's going to be interesting how well he develops his ground game in the future.

    Agree.

But if you remove head kicks or spinning kicks from Pettis' arsenal, then he is just an average striker.

People tend to forget that his hands are average. It's that Duke Rufus crazy shit that makes him special.

He is 3rd degree BlackBelt in TDK. He has more than Head Kicks. And if he doesnt, something is wrong with his teaching.

Well, again, all I can go by is what I've seen. His hands are average and I've never seen him utilize effective leg kicks.

Roufus is a great Muay Thai trainer so I wouldn't point to the teaching.

And who knows, Pettis did throw some leg kicks against Henderson so maybe he just needs to commit.

All that being said, I still think Guida takes him down easily. Pettis doesn't have the takedown defense to stop the top wrestlers in the division.

Looking back on Season 13, that mini Couture guy might have actually been pretty good. He gave Tony probably the toughest fight until he got caught by that up kick.

Thanks for the reminder... I actually had a small computer issue that threw me off. The standings are updated!!!!

no hate here, TLC. I dig Pettis. Nice young talent. I think he will do alot of improving, he actually reminds me of a very young Nick Diaz. But as Nick was a very average UFC fighter back then, so is Pettis. Do I think he will be at the top in time, absolutely. But he has alot to go as of right now.

The funny thing is that TLC will call a guy like Diego Sanchez a scrub yet Pettis is a superstar.

    I just don't get it.

Yeah he needs some work. But his fighting off his back something nice to watch. He can definitely build on that. Guida is tough tho.
