that was a fun fight... Frazier was on the fade but still pretty formidable and Bugner fought really well... took some hellacious shots but hung in there, losing competitively in one of his best showings against a top-class heavyweight
Yep, Frazier had his back to the camera when it landed, you can see him dip. Personally, I think 15 rounds with Ali in 1971 did more damage to Joe than the 2 rounds with Foreman.
Round 1: 10-9 Canelo. Canelo showed crisp combos in the later stages of the round, Rhodes a little easy to hit, Canelo showed good poise, clear round for him.
Yep. after 71' Joe was never the same. Bloody hell he was great that night though. I'd never seen him fight better after or before, actually.
I agree to a certain extent... the punishment of that fight definitely changed things and Yank Durham became paranoid of letting Frazier fight good heavyweights but I think the psychological damage of the Foreman fight must have been simply enormous... He and Bugner put on a great show... Bugner definitely rocked him with that shot, and Frazier showed great class in not smashing him when he was stuck on the ropes after the hook that dropped him in the 10th.. Bugner was wide open, out of it, halfway to the floor and Frazier just sort of looked at the referee like "he's down, start counting for fuck's sake" Bugner is remembered mainly for falling short against the top tier and for several losses to downright lousy heavyweights, but there is a lot of quality in his resume, some fine showings against outstanding heavyweights and some real quality wins sprinkled in there as well
The sight of him being bullied by sawn-off Southpaw and all round chump, Jack Bodell, was enough for me to decide that the man blew too hot and too cold to be really regarded as an ATG contender.
Not to mention both uttering and being the subject of some of boxings all-time-great one-liners....which I will keep on ice as I now need to sleep ::
Yeah, that's right. Forgot about that. Very classy by Joe. And yeah, Ali was superb in defeat. He put to rest (or at least should have) any doubts about his heart in that fight. One of the most courageous fighters ever I.M.O. (Also my favourite fighter O.A.T, I should add).
Did you hear about the one after the 2nd Ali fight? Bugner was castigated for his performance in the sweltering conditions of Kuala Lumpur by promoter Micky Duff. Duff supposedly got stuck into Bugner, saying "it's all about the money, isn't it Joe" whereupon Joe replied "No. Its about the money....and being able to spend it"
