Name a Fighter that U Think was Virtually UNBEATABLE @ a Particular Weight & NAME that Weight as Well...For Example, REED Thinks Roy Jones Jr. was UNBEATABLE @ 168lbs...REED Also Thinks Floyd Mayweather was UNBEATABLE @ 130lbs.... Name Some Others... REED:fightme:
I don't believe in that THere is always a style that will trouble a fighter, no matter how great he is... there are guys who specialize in ahving the number of great fighters, some guys are lucky and never meet that guy at a certain weight, but I don't believe in "unbeatable @" To me, the way to rank fighters all-time is not "who beats who" beacause then you'd have no list because you would ALWAYS find somebody who could beat somebody else... I think of it, instead, as a sort of all-time league... imagine, for instance, that every single great or really fucking good Welterweight had to fight every single other guy on the list (great/really fucking good list) 5 times a piece... at the end of all of those 100s of fights for each guy, you would have standings like you do in any league... the way I'd say it is this: In my personal opinion, the guy who would finish first in that league is Sugar Ray Robinson... but he is not winning EVERY fucking fight, no way... he wins MOST of them, but not all Same goes for Mayweather, Jones, Duran, Sweet Pea, Chavez, Ali, Foster, Ezzard, Pep, Monzon, Hagler, Olivares, Jofre, Archie Moore, all the greatest dudes you could possibly think of... They will LOSE FIGHTS in that scenario, they will lose fights sometimes to guys who wouldn't even be anywhere near .500 in such a tournament... it's the way that it goes There's no such thing as "unbeatable" when we are talking all-time...
Aaron Pryor @ 135. Alot of people don't seem to remember that Pryor was a natural lightweight, who only moved up to 140 because of the title shot vs Cervantes.
Agree with CDoggs assertion that no one is unbeatable, or even virtually unbeatable, as REED phrased it, but I would surely favour Jones at 168 and Lopez at 108 over any other fighter in division history, and not by a modest measure. I find Mayweather a little overblown at 130. That class is a lot deeper than the two mentioned above, I cant honestly see him as a prohibitive favourite over everyone before him. That said, his performance against an admittedly-troubled Corrales is something I could watch all day. Did not put one foot wrong through ten rounds --- not once.
Maybe not unbeatable, nobody is, were all human. However there are guys who I would have as favourites over anybody who fought in their particular weight class. Roy @ 168 and Floyd @ 130 are two of them
Those were the first examples that sprung to mind. Hearns at 154lbs (although Ray Leonard would argue that point) Ali at 200lbs and above Robinson at 147lbs if the myths are true.
I don't know about the whole "unbeatable" thing, but I would definitely make Jones a solid favorite over any fighter who fought at that weight. Partially due to his own skill set (even tho' his competition there, except for Toney, was nothing special) and partially, like Ramonza said, due to the lack of depth in the division and also the relative newness of it. If 168 didn't exist and RJJ was being reviewed in both the 160 and 175 lb divisions, this would be a totally different conversation. I don't see Mayweather as unbeatable at 130. There were some excellent fighters who would have a good shot of beating him. Arguello and Chavez have already been mentioned, and I would add Azumah Nelson to that list. I also think Rocky Lockridge and Hector Camacho could give Floyd a difficult outings as well...I would pick Floyd to win both of those fights, but I don't think it would be easy for him.
Lopez was 105. He only moved up to 108 late in his career to beat Will Grigsby. At 105, he was incredible.
The closest thing in history to a fighter actually proving himself unbeatable at a weight was Ezzard Charles at 175. But I stand by my original answer....
I was going to say Marciano vs anybody not weighing more than 185. Now this has me thinking. Marciano at 185 vs Holyfield at 190......somebody is getting whipped, and it isn't going to be pretty.
Tito would need to make an appointment if he wanted to land on Tommy. And besides, Manny wrapped Tommys hands, so you know Tommy would be brick-packing that night. :wack:
Still, Trinidad vs. Hearns - while a total mismatch on paper - would have been a lot of fun while it lasted at 154.
To PACIFY Those that Seem Bent Out of Shape by the WORDING in the Title of the Thread (:shit:), How Bout Naming Guys that U Have a HARD TIME Envisioning Losing a Fight @ a Particular Weight AND Name that Weight... Can't We All just PLAY ALONG???... REED:Lok:
