This topic usually divides people, so I thought we could get a census for FB.

I vote yes, he laid down undoubtedly.

  2. yes. I stand by your side on this one Ramonza! :kidcool:

    Impossible. It was the 80's.

Spinks bottled it, and was taken out accordingly.

    Scared and tanked.

  5. Have I ever told you how remarkably wise and talented you are? :kidcool:

    'Fake it'? No.

Go in looking for a place to lie down? Pretty much, yes.

Could he have gotten up or tried to but decided not to? I think so.

Spinks also had a trick knee and supposedly couldn't fight moving backwards very well. He had no choice against Tyson, but then again many people were intimidated by Tyson. He was a wrecking ball at that time.

Seldon faked it. Spinks actually had shots landed on him. The same kind of shots that damaged Tony Tucker's bridgework, concussed Trevor Berbick, and cracked Bonecrusher Smith's ribs.

  9. Do you think Spinks went into that fight intending to win? Do you think Spinks could have gotten up if he wanted to?

    The feeling is mutual.

Spinks went in scared as hell...was hurt by the first punch Tyson threw at him.

    "However"

the KO was real. Look at his eyes when he tries to get up. the guy was out.

Do I think he went in to win? I think he WANTED to win, but he---like a lot of other guys back then---froze up against the mystique of Mike Tyson. Tyson was so fast and relentless that he made guys secondguess themselves, and that was a recipe for disaster against a laserfast swarming puncher like Tyson.

He got up from the first shot, but he couldn't get up from the second shot. Someone should embed a vid because I can't embed one here.

  13. So you think it was a legitimate KO then? Fair enough.

    I disagree with this.

  14. Nah...the guy had a fake expression on his face like a BAD actor in his first gig, trying to pretend he's hurt. He really hammed up the performance for the viewing audience, pretending to try to get up and then turning round and falling through the ropes. I must have practiced this move a few times in the weeks leading up to the fight. Nice try but I wasn't fooled.

Well, when I see him get nailed by that shot and hit the canvas, he must have been a good actor to slam his own head off the canvas like that. his head bounced off the canvas and even then he was trying to get up. It's not necessarily the headshot that gives a boxer a concussion but rather the way their head slams off the canvas after their body has fallen backwards---and he didn't just fall; he got sent backwards and down with authority.

I think it was a legit TKO, and I think he was way too tight and nervous beforehand. He tried to get stuff going, but he seemed too tight and nervous.

Nope. He was severly overmatched and the first round KO was not much of a surprise. I've never thought for a second that Spinks took any sort of a dive. He might have froze up a bit once the action started, but the KO was legitimate.

  17. Buddy Rydell

    Buddy Rydell Boxingpress Alumnus

I'm sure you practice that move all the time, but that has nothing to do with the fight.

  18. His fall was cushioned by the fact that he sat down before his head hit the canvas. If you're going to fake it that's how you do it. He didn't fall FLAT ON HIS BACK the way Roy Jones fell against Johnson, Graham against Jackson, Rahman against Lewis, Holmes in his first KD from Tyson etc.

No, he fell back, ASS first...nice and convenient so he didn't hurt his poor little head too much.

    Dude faked the entire thing.

  19. Irish

    Irish Yuge, Beautiful

    Spinks a faggit.

  20. Besides...the final punch that Tyson hit him with wasn't a big punch. It was a relatively soft little inside right hook that Tyson was merely using to start setting up his more devastating combos. Spinks evidently wanted no part of those coming combos (who can blame him?) and so took the opportunity to sit down right there and then.

It was a legit KO. Almost all the damage was from the brutal left uppercut. Spinks was out on his feet after that, it just appeared that the body shot put him down. The hard right after the KD sealed it, but it was already over at that point.

Anyway, bad poll options, he was scared yes, but it was a legit KO.

Bleeder, don't pay any attention to Sly. It's faux controversy on his end. Just likes to wind people up.

I'm waiting for his "Corrales Faked His Motorcycle Accident" thread.

  23. I don't recall starting the thread. :kick:

Just watched it again a few times. Man, did Spinks' head ever bounce off the canvas!

Nice call, sly. What's next? Are you gonna ask us if Benny "Kid" Paret threw the fight against Emile Griffith?

  25. Nobleart

    Nobleart Narwhal King

He was scared and legitimately KO'd. He definitely froze up and he probably didn't think he could win, but he didn't throw the fight.

First knockdown was from a solid body shot. Knockout was from a solid, compact right hook to the temple, and Spinks bouncing his head off the canvas pretty fucking hard. Boxers have hit their heads on the deck like that before and never woken up.

What I gather from this thread is that Sly is not the brightest dude.

    That is all.

You forgot to mention the brutal left uppercut that hurt Spinks bad before the bodyshot.

I'm not sure the result would have been any different if he'd come in brave. He had nothing for Tyson.
