Do you know of a GREAT fighter.....

Discussion in 'General Boxing Discussion' started by Destruction and Mayhem, Jul 19, 2011.

  1. ...other than Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins who lost his first professional fight and then went on to be a legend?

Very unusual feat I would think....

As a matter of fact, a greater fighter than Bernard Hopkins -- HENRY ARMSTRONG

    Miguel Canto

Rumour had it Marciano did, but I dont know the story behind it.
Arguello and Donaire are two who lost very, very early fights, I think. Cant be arsed boxrecing though.

Quite a few great latin american fighters lost early fights, thy got brought up hard there.

Sandy Saddler in just second pro fight was matched against Jock Leslie, a real good featherweight and was stopped in the 3rd

He was never within 10 miles of getting stopped in the years after that

I think Freddie Zivic lost his second or 3rd fight. There have been plenty others.

Steve had already given my answer when I read the first post. If we're talking great fighters it's hard to think of any other than those mentioned already who lost their FIRST fight. A few have lost their second, Donaire as mentioned by Hut. Marc Johnson lost a decision to Richie Wenton in his second pro fight. Tapia drew his first or second I think.

And also add Rafael Marquez to the list. He was stopped in his pro debut.

Arguello and Armstrong were the two that came to mind, both having been KO'd in their pro debuts no less.

Benny Leonard also lost his pro debut if I'm not mistaken. As did... ah, I forget if it's Carlos or Manuel Ortiz, but one of them for sure.

Rafael Marquez, granted his first fight was either an 8 rounder or 10.

Didn't Armstrong start his career at like 1-3 ? I'm pretty sure he lost at least 2 of his first 4.
