    He's a total chode isn't he?

Incidentally, like I said I get the whole "the time is irrelevant" thing, but in a way it isn't. There's like a 99.5% chance Chavez would not have even landed another punch on Taylor, therefore I think it's safe to say Taylor was able to continue :kidcool:

I just think whether or not he could have landed another one is irrelevant

yup. He already beat him. He didnt need to land another. Now if taylor looked at the ref and responded, it would be a different story.

I got tired of this debate years ago but I always thought that Steele made the right decision based on the Legendary Nights documentary.

Blame Lou Duva for damn near entering the ring and distracting Taylor when Steele was asking him if he could continue.

Regardless it was a hard spot for any ref on a fight of that magnitude.

But I don't buy the fact that Steele was in Don king's pockets. If he was he sure waited till the last fucking moment to have an impact on the outcome.

what else could he have done to that point? penalized taylor for punching the shit out of chavez's face?

  17. He could have stopped the fight the moment Taylor was dropped, for example, if his intention was always to hand the fight to Chavez. He could have also prematurely stopped it the moment Chavez had him hurt, prior to the KD.

I don't think Steele deliberately stopped it to help Chavez.

he could have called body punches low blows, all sorts of things like that

I don't really buy the conspiracy either

    YES.

Time left to land another punch is irrelevant !! The ref was NOT watching the clock (and he SHOULDN'T, it's not his job nor relevant to his job other than for seperating fighters at the bell). Taylor didn't respond, and Steele was scared he'd witness a ring murder if he let it continue, so he rightfully stopped it. The fact that there were only a few seconds left is really just coincidental, and nothing more.

This is what i was going to say. There are tons of things Steele could have done. Yet he waited for 5 seconds left on a chance Taylor goes down? Please.

    Some things to think about...

Ok so what exactly was Steele supposed to do for the four remaining seconds? He already asked Taylor twice if he was ok. Was he supposed to keep asking a 3rd, 4th, or 5th time? Some refs ask once and thats it.

Steele was in Taylors face when he asked him. INCHES. He was so close to him, it was kind of intimate. Unless your beyond f'd up, I don't know how your attention can get distracted when another man is asking you questions in your "personal space."

Taylor had been a figher for how long? I think he knew the significance of the question "are you ok" being asked after a knockdown. Hell put anyone one of us fight fans in the ring and if we get knocked down, we would all be pretty damn sure we had better answer that question as quickly and clearly as possible. I think if Taylor was physically able to comprehend or answer the question, he would have. Problem is, he wasn't.

I personally believe if this knockdown happened in the middle of the ring, Chavez's win would not be disputed at all and this thread wouldn't exist.

Fractured facial bone, pissing pure blood, disfigured face. Steele was the only other man in the ring and knew more than anyone of how much of a beating Taylor had taken. He knew the fight was close to being over, but wasn't sure exactly how much time. How could he possibly let the fight go on with Taylor not responding to his question twice? If there was enough time for Chavez to land one more right, and Taylor got seriously injured, how exactly was he going to explain himself letting the fight go on, again with Taylor not answering him?
