Obviously this would've been a war, but I think Vargas edged him in speed and had heavier hands. Vargas hurts margarita twice in the fight then proceeds to win UD12 in a mexican war :fightme:

Agreed. Keep in mind that Vargas was alot physically stronger than Cotto. I dont see Tony being able to force him back as much. I like Vargas by 8-4 UD.

On hindsight I think Vargas is underrated today. Pre-Tito he was goddamn good! He simply ran into an all time great in Tito.

I'd pick a prime Vargas over anyone at 147-154 currently.

Prime Vargas was very good. He edged Winky in a close fight(Winky probably deserved the verdict but Vargas was competitive) and fought good quality opponents before facing Trinidad.

He would have outboxed Margarito en route to a UD. It would have had alot of exciting moments and good exchanges and Vargas would have bled from his nose and mouth for sure but he would have won.

I think Vargas was more than good enough a boxer to beat Margarito, even with the wraps

    Vargas would've whipped Margarito bad.

Yes, Vargas is a little under-rated in hindsight. He's definitely a step above Margarito, & would've shown it.

    Tito's an all time great?

To add to the sentiment, Margarito was always pretty shit at 154.

  10. Both Floyd and Pacquiao would fuck him up. Everyone else, sure.

    As to the thread:

Vargas by decision, everyday of the week. Only possible outcome.

Editted to add: Sorry Xplosive, I didn't realize that your post was from 2008.

What are you basing Pac beating him on, all of Pac's fights at 154? No way Pac beats Vargas at 154. Floyd, maybe.

Vargas was a big, skilled junior MW.. he's getting a bit underrated here.

  12. It's pac we're talking about here. You know..the phenomenon from the Philipines? The guy that never runs out of gas? The lightening quick southpaw that throws 100 punches a round?

Vargas would have no answer to that. Sorry.

  13. loadedgloves

The one who never met a straight right or a counterpunch he didn't like? The one who looks great against 147 lbers who are shot or coming off of horrific asskickings?

Put him in with a prime Vargas at 154 pre-Tito and the results would be markedly different than they have been thus far. Especially if you throw in blood tests..

  14. Tito would probably be too powerful for Pac, but Nando would get chopped up eventually.

I disagree. I think Tito would get carved up by Pac, whereas Vargas would not.

Then again, I'm assuming the Tito fight would be at 147, and Vargas was never a 147 lber..

considering the guys he's been fighting at 147 and 154, Pacquiao is amazingly overrated

    Pacquiao's no defensive specialist.

He would get hit repeatedly by a young Trinidad and he cannot do what De La Hoya did to avoid it. Pac-Man gets stopped by Tito in brutal fashion.

Vargas would lose a decision at 154 but he'd give Pacquiao hell.

Pac is so much faster than Tito, it isn't even funny. He would be in and out before the lumbering Tito had a chance to plant and throw. All night long.

I'm as a big a Tito detractor as anyone here, but can anyone seriously tell me that Pac has been in with a welterweight anywhere near as formidable in his prime as Trinidad?

    Hoya was an old man
Margarito was a punching bag and was dispatched far more impressively first by a fading Mosley
Clottey covers up and tries to land one counterpunch at a time like it's his job
    Cotto's vulnerabilities are well documented

Don't get me wrong, Pac is a great fighter, but I can't see how it is just a foregone conclusion that he motors all over a big, offensively dangerous, exceptionally powerful Welterweight like Trinidad...

You may have a point. I was just never that impressed with Trinidad as a fighter, never saw what everyone else saw, never thought he was a "complete" fighter. Plus, the era of the Trinidiots had a profound impact on me.. I probably underrate Tito a bit.

Nevertheless, I still think it's a matter of styles and attributes here. Pac is just so fast and offensively gifted.. while his opponents at 147 have all been limited in one way or another, I still think he could easily replicate De La Hoya's effort. And Trinidad might catch him at times, maybe drop him, but I don't think he'd be able to take him out.

Pacquiao would succumb to Trinidad's punch at some point, but I think he gets the best of Vargas, even if it is at 154.

Yeah but Cotto is no faster than Trinidad and he was able to repeatedly land short hooks and uppercuts inside before he got hit with a punch he never recovered from. He marked Manny up pretty good.... Hell, even ANTONIO MARGARITO was able to land some shots in there... You mean to mell me those guys are faster than Trinidad???

Trinidad has faster hands than Cotto, and has longer reach. And Manny would come right at him... The complete contrary to what De La Hoya and Hopkins did. And a style of fighting Pacquiao is not capable of adapting.

He would be hit by Trinidad. And he would be hit often by him. And I have a hard time envisioning him taking his punch.

    I hear you, man

I was never a believer in Trinidad either... but he was undeniably potent puncher... and aggressively going to him is dangerous

And I'm not so sure Pac can box that way (at 5'6 or 5'7) effectively for 12 rounds
