Last blockbuster based on an original script?

Serious question - what was the last heavily promoted blockbuster movie that wasn't based on a remake, a comic book adaptation, childrens cartoon, BLOCKBUSTER childrens book or a sequel of the aforementioned.

Hell, it doesn't even have to be a totally original script, lets count book adaptations that didn't already have a massive built in audience as 'original' (aka not LOTR or Harry Potter).

They say pop will eat itself, well Hollywood is barely shoulders, neck and a chewing mouth by this point. Fucking RIDICULOUS.:shit:

Doesn't "childrens cartoon" disqualify Finding Nemo?

The Matrix grossed over 200 million, but that was 1999. American Beauty, also 1999, did over 350 million. Sixth Sense, again 1999, did over 600 million.

More recently 300 did over 200 million. Gran Torino and Inglourious Basterds both did over 150 million. 100 million used to be the mark of a blockbuster. Black Swan and Slumdog Millionaire went over that mark as well.

I don't think the movie industry is nearly as inept as you'd like to believe. I for one love all of the comic book adaptations and the animated movies like Toy Story, Shrek, Up, Wall-E, and the list goes on and on just keep getting better and better.

Wall-E was original, as was Finding Nemo and The Incredibles. Toy Story as well.

Inception would seem to be the most recent. It was pretty good.

 

BASED on a children's cartoon. So Fat Albert and Speed Racer wouldn't work, but original animated features would, I think.

 

300 was a comic book adaptation. Pirates of Carribean was obviously based on a Disney ride with a pretty involved back story, I'd say that half counts at best. Ages ago, too.

 

Your question says nothing about that though. It counts as per the question. More than Avatar at any rate.

 

If that is the case then there are loads more of examples.

Up, for example, grossed over 700 million dollars worldwide.

Monsters, Inc. grossed over 500 million dollars worldwide.
