I'm sure there's already a thread or discussion on this, whatever. I just saw it for the first time last week, and wow.. all I have to say is that Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the best actors of our generation, if not THE best.

Without him it's a decent film, maybe a little bit heavy on the cheap/drama school symbolism, but decent. But his performance in this film is so amazing, it makes the film considerably better on its own.

    Just throwing that out there.

You are right. His performance made that movie. You actually give the movie more credit without him than i would. When i watch that movie, i just fast forward to his scenes. The rest of the movie doesnt do it for me.

FYI. I just found out DDL wasn't an American this year. This whole time i thought he was from here.

It's not really.... Day-Lewis drags that movie from the gutter..

I guess you're right. He was amazing in this, but as a whole I imagine each actor/actress contributed towards the success of the film

DiCaprio is good. He just wasn't in this. He's become Scorcese's boy, but was cast about 5 years too early for this role.

Just didn't fit the part. Not sure Cameron Diaz was a great fit for this movie either.

Not in this movie, but he is great in 90% of his roles

I didn't like this. DDL was excellent in a menacing role but Leo was awful in it.

Fully agree that DiCaprio was awful in his role, and also think he would've done much better in the same role 5 years later.

I dont even blame dicraprio. I blame Scorcese and the writers. Dicaprio has always been a good actor. Even when he was young. But you basically gave him nothing to work with in this movie. You never made him better than DDL. There was never any point that he was going to beat Lewis and even when he fought the only reason he won was because of outside interference. The whole movie, he was just one big pussy

Diaz was horrible in the movie, DiCaprio is a fantastic actor however in gangs he is brutal.

The butchers is the one and only good thing about this movie - it was a bore

Agreed on all counts. Leo didn't have much to work with thus he kind of sucked (as much as I hate to admit it). Likewise, Diaz didn't have much to work with, but I thought she did good in the scene when Bill was throwing shit at her and as an actress she had to pretend she was pretending not to be scared while pretending she really was.

And I definitely agree that Bill carried and made an unwatchable movie watchable just off of his performance. Come to think of it how good is "There Will Be Blood" without DDL in that film? Probably not half as good either.

i didn't think this movie was much cop and didn't think DDL did anything to make it much better either.

I don't think that movie even gets made without him attached to it.

DDL should've got the Oscar for this instead of Denzel getting it for Training Day.

DiCaprio is the most overrated actor ever. He is decent, nothing more or less.

You are crazy Gatti. Just Crazy

    What's Eating Gilbert Grape
    Basketball Diaries
    This Boy's Life
    Romeo & Juliet
    Marvin's Room
    Catch Me if You can
    The Departed
    The Aviator
    Blood Diamond
    Revolutionary Road

And those are the movies he is great in. I haven't listed the movies he is good in.

You arent overrated if you can put performances like this together.

  22. The Genius

Leo is definitely not overrated at least not anymore. He's more than proven himself as a top flight actor. It's like saying Ed Norton is overrated. At one time maybe but now he's proven. Johnny Depp would be another but he is now dangerously close to the DeNiro/Pacino/Nicholson trap of playing the same character in every movie now.

She was hot in Vanilla Sky (loved the doona scene), but she was hot in a lot of films. I just can't stand her as she gets older.

I agree, that was a good movie. Sweeney Todd - more Burton shite.

The Genius touched on the DeNiro / Pacino disease, well Burton has the directors cut

I dont like burton much these days either, but sweeney todd was good man.

LDC was better when he was younger. Now he always plays the 'tortured soul' character. And his 'angry' moments are not very convincing.

    Just my opinion.
