It looks like another big name filmmaker will be lending his talents to the small screen. Spike Lee will be joining the ranks of recent film-to-television directors that includes names like Martin Scorsese, Michael Mann and Frank Darabont (among many, many others). It seems Lee is teaming up with Entrouage creator Doug Ellin to bring a new boxing drama, loosely based on the life of Mike Tyson, to HBO.

Although this is not the first time Spike has worked with HBO (When the Levees Broke and If God Is Willing and Da Creek Don't Rise) it will mark his first time behind the camera for an actual television series as he's slated to direct the pilot for Da Brick. As Deadline reports:

"The original germ of an idea for Da Brick came out of a meeting the two had on the set of the veteran comedy, which was inspired by Mark Wahlberg's early years in Hollywood. "That's when Mike asked me, why don't do with my life what we did with Mark's life," Ellin said.

I wonder if Spike is going to find a way to have "Tyson" screwed over by the white establishment.

    Do you really, "wonder?"

Might've been interesting if any other director in the Universe were at the helm. Lee? No, thanks.

  5. I hate Spike Lee. SHIT SHIT filmmaker. He thinks he represents all black people. He doesn't represent me. He's an idiot that sees racism in his cornflakes.

Lee is an ass as a person but he has made some very good movies. He's made shit as all filmmakers have, but he's done quality work. Not to mention he's given a lot of stars big breaks and has helped tons of filmmakers along the way.

Example...Sam Jackson in Do The Right Thing...was the DJ...also Sam in Jungle Fever as Gator. Halle Berry's first role was Gator's crack head girlfriend

"Inside Man" with Denzel and Clive Owen was a good film.

    "Malcolm X" is a classic.

    "Clockers" is a good film

"Do The Right Thing" goes without saying.

"Get On The Bus" another good film made on a shoestring budget

    'He Got Game" decent film

His documentaries "Four Little Girls" and "When The Levees Broke" are classics. Especially the "Levees" documentary...for the record it wasn't only about black folks and New Orleans.

As an ex Brit now Canuck it's not unexpected you'd miss the themes in some of his films but it's disappointing.

Let me guess, you'd rather make a vat of popcorn then snuggle up to a fist full of Woody Allen movies.

  8. Do the right thing was shit. Mo better blues was shit. I hate his "directing". What's with the patented "man is standing still and background is moving" shit? Does he think that's clever? Does he think that sets the scene? And what's with the camera circling the charcters for a few minutes while they have a conversation? Man..that dude annoys me with his isms kasisms!

Malcolm X was great. But the sun shines on even a dog's ass every now and then. besides I attribute the greatness of Malcolm X more to Denzel's performance and the general malcolm X story than I do to what Lee did with it. John Singleton and even many a white director would have done a much better job with that film.

Jungle Fever was an enjoyable film i guess...but it made black men and black women look bad and so I hate him for it.

    Fuck Spike Lee.

Outside of mentioning Jackson and berry, note I didnt include Jungle Fever.

First, I bet you were in the UK when "Do The Right Thing" came out thus its importance flies over your head. Thus I understand your point.

if Malcom X was great because of Denzel then you'd have to say Mo' Better Blues was shit because of him as well. he was the lead in BOTH films. What about "He Got Game?" Denzel was the lead in that as well.

Spike Lee is an excellent director when he's on his game.

Just as long as he doesn't try to do anymore War films, I'm ok with just about anything they hand over to him.

    Let's not go too far.

He has made some good movies, but there are very few excellent directors and Lee isnt one of them.

I enjoyed the "Levee" and "Four Little Girls" documentaries, they were well done

    I also enjoyed "Clockers"

while Malcolm X was a bit long, I thought it was overall a good film and of course, Washington was terrific in the title role

"Do The Right Thing" was both good and bad

I understand what Sly is getting at with him seeing racism in his cornflakes, and that is something that ahs also rubbed me the wrong way... but the guy has made some good films

Though Spike HATES the Lable, he Really Is "The BLACK Woody Allen"....Allen Writes & Directs for a Very SPECIFIC Demographic (Neurotic, Jewish, New Yorkers) & Mass Audiences DON'T Always "Get" his Flicks...Spike Lee is SIMILAR in that Way...

He Obviously has an Angry, Militant, NAPOLEAN COMPLEXish Side to him, but he's Done Some GREAT Work...A Guy Can B a GREAT Director Even if U DISlike a Particular Film of his...

Spike is never excellent. Because a movie is excellent, doesnt mean Spike's directing was excellent. And Spike isnt close to being one of the top 20 directors in the industry let alone 5 or 10. I could list 15 directors right now that shit on Spike Lee. 20 if im pushed.

It wouldnt be my own preferences, it would be fact. I could name 20 directors right now that the majority of the world would agree is better than spike. And saying spike is never excellent isnt nothing about a pre-conceived notion. It's my opinion. I think spike has done some good work. He has never done Excellent work.
