Can anyone justify Morales' getting a title shot?

I read that Erik Morales' next fight is for a vacant title - the one stripped from Timothy Bradley.

Can anyone possibly justify this? How in the hell does Erik Morales deserve a title shot at 140?

Welcome to the world of sanctioning bodies

The fact that Morales was already used up 4 or 5 years ago and was able to compete clsoely with one of the top 3 or 4 guys in the division speaks volumes about how positively horrendous it is

Does Morales deserve a shot? no, of course he doesn't... but this is nothing new

Did Duran deserve a shot at Joppy's "title"?

Do you think it's unfair of the WBC to offer him a title "shot" instead of just handing him the belt?

you should be more worried about credibility of the guy morales is facing. nevertheless Im glad this is on the mayweather jr. ortiz card. it will surely be another morales war i witness first hand.

There's actually a difference between the two, though.

Joppy was already a titlist, having won the belt in the ring (regaining the title that he traveled to Japan to initially win, if I have my timeline correct). Duran was simply an undeserving contender being given a title shot solely based on his name.

Morales-Barrios is a sanctioning body going out of its way to create a vacant title for an undeserving challenger (even as much as I love Morales and a fighter and recognize his strong showing against Maidana). Worse, he's facing a shot opponent who has never before fought at the weight at which he's contender for a belt.

As low as the sanctioning bodies have sunk through the years, I'm fairly certain even this scenario is a first. The WBC has been desperate to be part of the "first ever Mexican to win titles in four divisions" and have been willing to put a belt at stake every time Barrera, Morales and Marquez take a fight in a new weight class.

the sad part in all of this, is the fact that the Sept 17 PPV from an action standpoint is actually one of the best lineups in a long time.

    Mayweather-Ortiz
    Alvarez-Gomez
    Morales-Barrios
    Jhonny Gonzalez-Elio Rojas
    Jessie Vargas-Josesito Lopez

Every fight on the card is TV-worthy. Gonzalez-Rojas and Vargas-Lopez should be entertaining and competitive. The rest should be fun for however long they last.

I've seen worse than Morales get a title shot and I've seen worse than Barrios get a title shot.

I think the WBA and IBF are generally worse about doing this than the WBC and the WBO, but the WBC is on a nice little run of acting like the worst sanctioning body, lately.

The Mike Alvarado situation, stripping Bradley, giving title shots to both Barrios and Morales at the same time (slipping one into a vacant title bout is fairly commonplace...see Dib/Lacierva, for example)...makes the WBC JW belt a complete disaster.

The WBA has the 'let's call the interim belt the regular belt so we can have two champions' which is my biggest pet peeve at the moment, I think.

The IBF is often an f'ing joke...and they reward certain (usually US) fighters with multiple title shots without having to do too much...and often give them a spoonfed challenger for a vacant title.

The WBO generally goes for undefeated Europeans...this tendency was mocked in the past until their champions started winning unifications...but I would agree that they often get to be champions via a pretty easy path...

So lately, it's sort of been a race to the bottom...Morales/Barrios is bad, but it's not the worst example we can come up with in the past few months with a little effort...it's just the worst example because of how visible it is to everyone.

I think Morales' fight with Maidan justifies him fighting for a tittle at 140.

His name alone would eventually get him a shot. But he earned his shot with that fight with Maidana.

This reminds me of the David Diaz- Pacquiao situtation.

Arum would not let anyone fight Diaz because he was saving that tittle for Pacquiao at 135.

Morales will fight in the GDB card of Ortiz/Mayweather only to eventually give up the tittle to Khan in December.

The only problem I have is Morale's oponent. The guy proved he can hang with Maidana so why BArrios? That guy hasn't had a meaningful win since he was at 130 like 5 years ago.

So the number 1 guy in the division's been striped (for the 2nd time) and the title given to a contest between two guys without a win in the division between them? Over the years I've moved through outraged, to amused to just downright bored by these jokers.

Again.....just fucking IGNORE THEM, guys. Ignore them and they'll go away.

    Bradley = 140lb champ, Amir Khan = no1 contender.

I'd like to see Bradley fight and beat the winner of Morales/Barrios, just to see if he can become the first fighter ever to get stripped of the same belt three times.

bottom line is most boxers have aspirations to win a belt from one of these sanctioning bodies that you all choose to shit on. tv networks prefer having belts on the line for the fights they broadcast also. without these title belts boxers would make less money, even considering ridiculous sanctioning fees.

boxers want recognition as the best

TV want to market their fights to us as being between between the best

the bodies aren't a tolerably legit means of recognising the best anymore. And we should ignore them en mass until a new way is used

Title shots go to top 15 fighters and even lower with exemptions. To JUSTITY Morales getting a title shot at 140 isn't that hard.

It is noticeably more difficult to JUSTITY him getting a shot at a vacant title because those are supposed to go to the two highest ranked available opponents.
