no fucking way does Liston stop Evander

Liston is in with a shot to stop anyone as hittable as Holyfield, no exceptions. None that I can see in HW history. I think, for this fight, he'd fancy his chances at trying (though Holyfield was teak-tough & a bitterly determined man, which could make this very watchable) but I think I see this as a fight where styles and physical aspects play a greater role (no doubt someone will try to draw from the Tyson fights & tell us Liston would quit when he realised he couldnt bully - Im not buying it).

Holyfield simply too much man for Liston. Holyfield by decision.

The baleful Liston's surly disposition and his known associations with gangsters has as much to do with this fearsome reputation as anything he ever did in a boxing ring.

But the man in the ring doesn't match the storied version to my eyes... I've seen every Liston fight available and what I see is essentially a careful, scientific boxer with a ramrod jab, good straight right, hard left hook, good body puncher... he's basically a technically sound boxer, careful, methodical... excellent technique, but slow hands and feet are two weaknesses.

I also think Liston's reputation is inflated by the Patterson wins and by the absurdly overhyped Cleveland Williams-a chinless, easily fatigued hard puncher who had one victory in his entire career over a top ten type of heavyweight, and lost the return- both of whom are constantly brought up when people speak of Liston...

This matchup would look a hell of a lot more like Holyfield/Mercer than it would look like Liston/Patterson... Holyfield isn't some chinless, terrified guy... he's bigger than Liston and if Liston were to beat him it would be by far his best victory...

This is a real good fight between two quality fighters... Liston jabs and leads... Evander counters during the occassional slam-bang confrontations, finishing the exchanges Liston starts... it's a good fight, but I like Holyfield with his quicker hands and his sharp counters inside to nullify Liston's battering ram jab... good action and a decision win for Commander Vander

I used to be prolific and write stuff like the above all the time, but I got sick of doing it over and over

but when know-nothing faggots like mIKE try to question whether or not I know my stuff, I get agitated

-Just kidding. I agree with cdogg187's assesment. Particularly the couple of lines I took the time to read.

it's only because you have been fed a lot of hype about Eric Clapton

if only you knew that playing the guitar better than he does was not this amazing thing, then you wouldn't think I was being arrogant at all

he's not that good a guitar player, man

I swear to god there are a million guys easily that play better than he does

I am one of them, and I don't consider myself a great guitarist by any stretch of the imagination

But I would clown that motherfucker if we ever had ourselves a jam

Just as I myself would get clowned by hundreds of thousands of badass motherfuckers out there

    as would I

the bodypunching would be particularly punishing

Clapton is too one-dimensional for Liston, his easy listening blooze pap would not impress him in the least, nor would his repetitive guitar solos

I've noticed that it's become trendy to call Clapton shitty because of his lack of technical correctness (or whatever you want to call it). But nitpicking about his technical ability aside, I would say there are very few people in this world who could create an original guitar style and have it be successful the way he did.

Ok, let's not go overboard here. Byrd might KO Clapton, but no way does he lose to McCline

Actually it was spelled GOOFi or something of those lines, to make it even worse. When he was still Mount he outpointed Barret, The Ring wrote that if he would punch and not slap, he might be a good sparring partner. Then when he KOed Maskaev, he had a long article where his 'relaxed punching style' was compared to George Foreman:cheer:

Yes. However you can always tell a Clapton solo.
cdogg187, your criteria for "better" does seem to be along the lines of "more technically proficient".

    Personally, I love Claptons playing.
He uses a small bag of tricks as far as scale choices, sure, & I could walk into my local guitar shop and trip over a more technically proficient player, but I love his style, and for the style of music he plays, putting aside the fact he's basically a blues/ pentatonic/ mixo scale user, he employs every trick in the book. (tone, dynamics, double-stops, attack, noises, repitition)
He has great vibrato. Impeccable phrasing. Excellent melodic sense & is a fantastic improviser.
If you think he always sounds the same, imagine how "samey" any other guitarist would sound if you heard them play the amount of improvised blues solo's you've heard from slowhand.

Both Mr. Holyfield and Mr. Liston would be embarrassed to see those at ringside discussing Eric Clapton during their fight.

    Agree with ramonza as well
