Yeah, Olivares is definitely a better all round fighter than Taylor. Just not a better win, here.

    Yeah, I don't contest that.

Though in a just world, the record books would read Taylor UD Chavez in any case.

In a just world it'd have been scheduled over 15 like title fights should and there wouldn't be this interminable controversy 21 years later!

Honestly, jaws, if you think Arguello is a pushover for anyone, it is you who is a complete moron with no grasp of "reality"

Jaws' denigrating of Arguello is strange, frankly

Odd to target a three-division champ with an outstanding resume and act as if a fight between he and Chavez would be some sort of one-sided bloodletting

Nobody who ever lived between 126 and 135 has an easy time with Alexis Arguello

In Jaws' defence I don't think he was talking about a MM as one sided, he was talking about their levels of greatness.

well, I read him as saying that one could tell that chavez was much better by simply watching the two... the implication that Arguello paled in comparison

Chavez' greatness is a level above Arguello. I think ARguello is top 25-40 or so all time, but I also think Chavez is clear top 20 borderline top 10.

Never did I suggest a fight between the two would be anything other than an epic toss up though.

It's definitely a study in contrasts. The tall, spindly-looking fluid Arguello who boxed behind a long jab with the short, compact, in-fighter from Culiacan.

Arguello had deceptive power and he was a textbook boxer (He didn't look like he put much on his punches, and then the other guy would be kneeling on the canvas, trying to shake out the cobwebs). Chavez had heavy hands, period. He wasn't trying to put everything on every shot, but his body attack and pressure just wore people out---sometimes by attrition. His defense worsened as he got older, but he was great at bobbing and moving his head to avoid the full force of punches in his prime.

Chavez had an incredible chin that was only cracked late in his career. I think Chavez edges it. They both have great resumés, but Chavez went on a long tear and was consistent. Arguello, in his prime, lost to a few guys like Reyes, Fernandez and Marcel. I don't see Chavez losing to those guys.

Is this the most scientific analysis? No. I'm going by how I feel.

I lean towards Arguello, even though i'm a bigger fan of Chavez than of him.

I'm biased here. Maybe it's because i'm a big fan of the "Other" Fab Four of the eighties: Chacon, Limon, Edwards and Navarette (who i met personally when he was already punch-drunk and living in abject poverty).

And Arguello had dominating TKO victories over each one of them.

He also has TKO wins over Escalera (twice), Olivares, Mancini, Ganigan, among others. And even with common JCC top opponents (JL Ramirez, Ruben Castillo...) he compares favorably.

Arguello never had JC Chavez's "mystique", but he's arguably the greater fighter.

Resumé wise I'd have to say similar.

Ability wise I think Arguello would have fucked Chavez up at any weight.

I'd pick Arguello over Chavez at 130 I think. At 135, pick 'em. At 140, you'd have to favour Chavez.

Could go either way at any weight, obviously.

would you pick anyone to "fuck him up"?

I mean honestly, a fighter that tough and that good doesn't get "fucked up" at his best, I don't care who the hell he is fighting

:truce: Exactly what I think. Just about even Steven when it comes to either talent OR accomplishment. Head to head its even as well. Man that woulda been a great fight at 135!!!!! Alexis woulda had the edge at 130,...and JC woulda had the edge at 140. At lightweight, it woulda been Pick'em.
