Is Floyd Mayweather a definitive top 20 P4P all timer?

Discussion in 'General Boxing Discussion' started by Destruction and Mayhem, Aug 12, 2011.

  1. Apparently I'm obsessed with Mayweather, regardless of what I do to show otherwise, so I say fuck it:

If you're going to do the time, you may as well commit the crime!

Is Floyd Mayweather Jnr a Definitive Top 20 all time in terms of talent (because contemporary fighers are never afforded the opportunity in fans' eyes to be mentioned alongside the retired legends of yesterday in terms of achievements)?

I'd say yes UNDOUBTEDLY and anyone who says otherwise doesn't know boxing.

    Talent? Yes

Accomplishment? Not quite, but still time to change that.

If we're talking strictly talent, then yes, absolutely. There isn't much he does wrong technically, if at all.

Did you see his music video?

  9. Talent man, talent.

I think his accomplishments are grossly underrated, but I know I'll get very few agreeing with me there.

    Therefore we're just talking talent.

He is a five-division world champion, where he has won ten world titles, including the lineal championship in two different weight classes. He is a two-time The Ring "Fighter of the Year" winning the award in 1998 and 2007, and also Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) "Fighter of the Year" in 2007. He is undefeated as a professional boxer.

Really not even much to say about it. Dude's accomplishments are up there with the greatest in the sport. Only Pacquiao comes to mind in terms of recent history as coming close to those feats.

In terms of ability? He's in the top 20.

In terms of accomplishment/greatness? Probably not.

Boxers aren't judged by talent, they are judged by accomplishments. And you wonder why people bring up Floyd every time you post.

    Yes they are.

Only on message boards and it's nothing but opinion. Certainly not fact.

Obviously I won't deny Floyd's talent, he is a very talented fighter. I just don't do talent ranking. That's ridiculous.

if lists were done on Talent it woudl go

    1. RJJ

    2. Someone else...

Floyd is not a top 20 all time fighter, he just doesn't have the resume for it.

  19. Thank you.

    You're consistent in one area.

Ask a question, receive answers you don't like then change the criteria or slip in an addendum.

Change the title of your thread if this is the question you're asking.

there were plenty of fighters with amazing talent who didnt amount to shit. this is a very silly topic.

"talent"? I dont know about any of that, there's lots of crazily talented guys who never win anything, who dissappear before making an impact... such a list would be impossible to construct

as far as a real all-time rating based on how well he fights and who he fought against, he's between 20-40 easily, in my eyes... clearly one of the best 130 pounders of all time at the very least

  24. Yeah but Floyd has PROVEN his talent in his career.

Guys like Zab Judah were just Illusions that failed the test of their supposed talent. That's the difference chump punk bitch tits.

  25. cdogg187

    cdogg187 GLADYS

honestly, there have been guys as physically talented as them who went 14-4 (9) and called it a day

the poll question is absurd and unanswerable

  26. *Z*

*Z* WBC Silver Diamond Emeritus Champ

How come you're not calling everyone else an idiot Sly? Cdogg and Neil are saying the same thing I just said. You are asking something that is not measurable.

  27.

When I say talent I don't think of abstract "dude is faster, dude is more athletic" type shit that most of these morons think of. I'm talking about "who beats who" ability.

Anyway, I don't expect anyone to understand this simple meaning.

  28. cdogg187

    cdogg187 GLADYS

that is in no way synonymous with "talented", sly

  29. *Z*

*Z* WBC Silver Diamond Emeritus Champ

Basically, Sly is just doing what he always does, trying to give Mayweather credit for things he didn't do.

The ONLY way to measure a boxers greatness is in the ring. Period.

Sly, the issue is you can't see the fault in the question. It's not a "mayweather" issue.
