Chavez is the obvious pick vs Marquez, but at 130 Neil is right, it would have been a fight. You're talking about the Kats and Diaz fights, who the hell brought those up as evidence that Marquez would give Chavez a fight at 135?

The Whitaker fight didn't take place in Chavez's prime? What about the Taylor fight? We've already discussed that one to hell and back, Chavez was severely down on the scorecards and regardless of whether you think it SHOULD have, it easily COULD have ended in a wide decision for Taylor.

The Lockridge fight was certainly close, clear but close and competitive. I thought the LaPorte fight could've gone either way, tbh it was probably Chavez's but it's interesting how he always got the benefit of the doubt in those situations.

But once again.. how many other top 15 fighters got schooled like Chavez did against Whitaker in their prime? I'm not saying Chavez wasn't a great fighter. But top 15? If you want to see the difference between a top 15 ATG and an "ordinary" great fighter, go watch round 8 of Whitaker-Chavez.

Oh yeah, Duran and Mayweather Jr both beat Chavez at 135. I'd bet on Carlos Ortiz to do it as well.

 

Comparing Norton to Marquez is ridiculous...How many times has Marquez been out cold? Marquez is a classy fighter Norton was an overachiever..

Anyway, on the topic of the thread, I watched Benn-Eubank 1 a few weeks back. Great fight, though not that obscure (especially not to the Europeans on this forum).

 

interestingly enough i met laporte in vegas a few years ago and asked him who was better out of chavez and sanchez, and who wouldve won had they fought. without hesitation he tabbed sanchez.

 

Yes, because fighters have proven to be totally unbiased and reliable when it comes to this sort of thing

 

I'm ashamed to say I've never seen that fight in full, not sure why, just never got round to it

Yeah I've seen the highlights now and again on TV, and can remember the stoppage and Benns swollen eye clearly. Other than that though, not much.

 

Arguello-Oliveras

Two legends and an excellent fight with several twists on its plot, but not much talk about it. Probably because it gets overshadowed by Arguello-Pryor I, but IMO this fight is right at its class

Olivares was wildly inconsistent at 126, but on that night he was real sharp and the outcome was in doubt right until Arguello landed a monstrous short hook

that is a terrific fight

Greatest Mexican? It's close, but I might take Chavez for his consistency

If Olivares had trained more, he could have been so much greater than he was, and he was already pretty incredible... He's so underrated as a boxer, everyone thinks of his offense... but when he needed to be, he could be damn near unhittable

 

Definitely a debate, & more than a two-horse race, at that.

I prefer Olivares at #1.

 

#1 has to be Chavez.

It's sort of like picking Henry Armstrong over Ray Robinson overall P4P. You could make a good argument for both but universal acceptance goes with Robinson and Chavez. (overall and Mexicans)

If Salvador Sanchez was able to have a full career things might be different.
