How so, LOK? He's got the biggest fanbase in the world consisting of the craziest fans. When he was active, this board and every other board out there was a riot, littered with guys like TysonPride, GeeMoney, and Snaggles. Dumb kids mostly.
    If anything, Tyson was overrated.

Most fighters who get talked about a lot are going to be both overrated and underrated.

People will exaggerate their skills/achievements and others will downplay them.

People do this with Tyson to an extreme.

it is really a good one. I'm watching it while doing my cardio..

I say "underrated" because over time, after getting washed up i think people think he was overrated thus making him underrated

I respected Tyson but too many of his fights on ppv were absolute rip-offs. Too many sh*t quality fights against handpicked jokes and he made a large part of his career ripping people off of their money. It's not surprising that his final pro fight against McBride saw Tyson leave the ring in disgrace and getting pelted in the head by a beer can and him flipping off the fans as he went back to the locker room for the final time. That was the last remaining image of his pro career. Would've been nicer if he'd gone into retirement on a brighter note. But it's also telling of just what fans began to think of him in the latter stage of his career. A lot of "Bullsh*t" and "Fixed" chants were the norm after Tyson's fights, post-prison. He really had worn out his welcome in the sport of boxing.

Great viewing, in the sense it was hard not to watch, but I have a lasting resentment toward anything painting him in any way a sympathetic figure.

Yup. He's the dumb f*ck who signed away his life to Don King. Further more, he even signed John Horne and Rory Holloway as his 'advisors', giving them like 10% each of his earnings. How is this motherf*cker gonna go blaming everybody including the white man for his own troubles? His own decisions which he himself made? Marrying a whore, signing a lifelong criminal like Don King as his promoter and manager, not having a f*cking clue about where his money was going nor even reading over the contracts he was signing.
The guy right now should have like a quarter million in his bank account. But instead, he'll go blame everybody except himself for his life troubles. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that the people you've aligned yourself with are f*cking criminals!

I love how people expect a guy whose father was essentially a pimp, mother was degenerate, a guy who was running the street as a child mugging old ladies and in reform schools by the time he was an adolescent, to be a financially shrewd person who understands the difference between real and artifical emotional bonds and can successfully navigate being thrust into world-famous, massive, iconic status at the age of 20

Is this the one where he talks about his pigeons and how one kid came up to Mike when he was little grabbed his pigeon and ripped its head off in front of Mike ? And then Mike goes so then I learned to fight because then if anybody did that again I would fucking kill them (he said it with some much intensity with so much anger and violence in his voice and eyes that it made me change the channel out of fear!) Not only that it made me stop ripping off pigeon heads that belong to this little black guy who lives next door....haven't seen the kid in a while and his mom said he joined a boxing gym or something...true story.

So again, it's everybody else's fault except his. You don't need to be a genius to know that making Don King as both your promoter and manager is a pretty f*cked up business move considering you already know the man's history seeing that you're a "student of the game" who also learned some of the inside boxing business from the likes of D'amato.
And you also don't need an education to identify criminals and thugs who are trying to steal your money. And it's also in your best interest when you don't have the ability to read or write to have a lawyer present, preferably a lawyer of your own, to read through your contract and find out exactly how much money you're getting in a fight, instead of forking over 70% of your purse to your promoter/manager and some "friends" you keep around with you....and then wondering several years later where it all went.
Tyson was naive and completely gullible. But even as an adult he should've known better. If he didn't stay hooked on drugs and sh*t and f*cking prostitutes, maybe he could've seen what was going on around him.:dunno:

Again, I can only once again reference how easy it is to judge from your position...

I'm not saying Tyson's misery isn't some of his own creation... but analyzing his behavior and life choices critically from the standpoint of a regular guy whose parents were not street urchins and who wasn't getting abused in detention centers is pretty ridiculous.

This is a crude kid with no development, not even the faintest whiff of guidance, a feral human if you will and to top it off he's funny looking, has a comical high-pitched lispy voice... he's seen as an animal, a curiosity, a violent man-child... yet he's simultaneously worshipped, adored, showered with fame and riches, women who wouldn't have looked at him are throwing themselves at him, movie stars flock to shake his hand and get their pictures taken with him- people who wouldn't have ventured anywhere near the world he came from... he's only contact with any level of stability was with an 80 year old guy from a different world who again is really only interested in him because he can fight, don't ever forget that... the message is still that love/acceptance are intertwined with what he can do with his fists... all of that in mind, it is preposterous to apply solid working/middle-class life lessons and principles and "common sense" to a kid in that situation

MIke Tyson isn't blameless, but to say "well, I would have handled it far better than he did" is fucking stupid, especially coming from a background riotously at odds with his

Forgetting all the craziness, watching him come up as a kid it is impressive and to say otherwise is just hate.

    Financially shrewd!?

You could be a long, LONG way from shrewd to be in Tyson's earning potential for that many years & come out in a far better place than he has done.

Ive owned dogs who couldve wound up with more to their name.

    Again, easy judgement to make

Im not saying Tyson is some poor little angel, but you guys act like he ahd some sort of solid educational guidance

you are applying stuff to him that a guy in his position never would have learned in a million years

you are also completely overlooking what a masterful manipulator Don King is, especially when dealing with a kid who wouldn't know a friend from a tormentor if his life depended on it

It is interesting that we always talk about Tyson's money or being on drugs etc...

If you just saw him him in the ring facing the guys he faced and 17,18,19 he destroyed them.. His speed and head movement were just awesome.. To to this day you don't see anyone like him. He could hit for sure but it was even more the RIDICULOUS speed. Middleweight type speed

Tyson was always in control. All this sh*t about being an uncaged animal who snapped at any moment...I call BS on it all. If the guy was that unstable, why is it that he never laid a hand on anybody other than on a professional boxer? And when he was going insane after the Holyfield DQ, why did he swing but not make contact with the officers? He held back despite being an 'enraged animal'. If he was mad and hellbent on killing somebody, why was he so tame out of the ring? You'd think an uncaged wild animal who talked about killing people would've actually killed somebody. But he did it professionally in the ring. Never assaulted and killed a regular person outside the ring. I don't believe Tyson was anywhere near as screwed up in the head as people like to believe. He was angry, lonely and all that but not out of control. He even said it himself at a hearing when trying to get his license back in Vegas saying "I'm crazy but I'm not crazy like that, I don't wanna kill or rape nobody!" Are there different kinds of crazy? :scratcher:
He's right that nobody liked him for him but moreso because he was a good boxer. But that's how life is for everybody. Would we give a sh*t about any athlete or celebrity or singer if they didn't do what they did?
Tyson got more opportunities in his life than most. But even common sense in a person makes one think that he should step back and wonder sometimes. What world could this guy have been living in if he didn't even read over contracts he was signing? Come on cdogg. Simple life experience. He wasn't an idiot. The guy was street smart. And he learned enough living with the likes of D'amato to know about simple crooked sh*t that goes on in the boxing biz. He even mentioned this stuff in a documentary from like 1987 about how he was full aware about crooked promoters and how people were two-faced and trying to get his money.:dunno:

He was only like 5'9 legit. Easier for him to move like a middleweight than say a 6'5" giant. Plus he took steroids. If not for steroids, how did he go from being a 185lb dude to being a rock solid muscular 215lb dude so soon after? He didn't do any real weight lifting to that degree. :dunno:

Tyson was a whining bitch. Ever notice his fans were the worst fans in boxing history. He attracted the sh*t of the sh*t in terms of fans. Dumbest and most illogical motherf*ckers you could ever meet. How the f*ck do you make excuses and feel sorry for an SOB who whines that $20 million isn't enough? Stop defending him. He's an actor. The guy even admitted he was pretending to be crazy in order to sell his fights. Go watch Lewis/Tyson post fight interview. He says "Everything I did was in proposition for promoting the fight...."
You're buying into Tyson's BS like all those other guys who got ripped off of their money.

They never should've made this sh*t documentary. Tyson comes across as a bitch for the most part. Why doesn't he say in the documentary that he was a spoiled brat who got paid tens of millions for bum fights and used the money to get high and get laid? He was overpaid.
The families out there trying to live on a dollar a day deserve way more sympathy. He should've stayed in school.

no argument that he would move faster easier than some 6'5 giant. IMO 6'5 guys just don't look good and move well for boxers. Tyson is about 5'10-5'10.5 though, i've met him several times

He was 180-185lbs at 16 while training with Cus. He got much bigger and bulkier than even that. It's in one of the documentaries. And there are also rumours that he took steroids after prison, while preparing for McNeely. Notice his physique was more ripped for that McNeely fight than it had ever been before in his entire career with veins and a 6 pack popping out like the incredible hulk or some sh*t. He never was that ripped again.
