He did indeed, we had a debate over it here. He claimed that there had been a long pause, which Angelo Dundee confirmed, and the tapes that didn't show it had been edited by ESPN or whatever.

Yep, that was another one. After all, Don King was the "promoter of the whole fight" :wack:

Tyson himself accepted he had been whipped fair and square.

You know...I'm still pissed off at that Referee.

Truthfully, I agree that it was no controversy because the ref has the final say and Douglas was beating up Tyson badly...but the motherfucking ref didn't just administer the slowest count in history he also let Douglas rise at the count of 9 and 3/4. Tyson rose quicker than Douglas did in fact. Would have been the greatest comeback story of Mike's career if that fucking ref knew what a second was and Mike's career may have been on a different trajectory than it ultimately was. Motherfucking Doc Oct Mehran. :flip:

Actually, both guys were down 14 seconds, give or take half a second. So yes, both counts were bit slow but nothing extraordinary (since the rules don't actually say '10 seconds' but a 'count of ten'). Douglas beat the count, barely, while Tyson barely missed it

Don King is the fucking man if he was the reason for Meyran's absence since that fight. stick to "seconds" or else we go to the extreme and let there be ten seconds between each count so fighters have 100 seconds to rise. Can't have it both ways. But even then, as I said before...Douglas didn't get to his feet until loooooooong after the count of 9.

I'm happy that Meyfuckingran has been subsequently punished!! :hammert:

Know what? I just rewatched the Douglas Tyson count and Douglas was in more trouble than i remembered. Had that been a properly timed count....who knows. Would have been interesting.

Also, it goes without saying, but the Tyson of a few years previous would have beaten Douglas comfortably.

    bullshit

he was a good, professional ref with a distinguished record

King is a fucking reptile, he has done far more to undermine and hurt the sport and its partipants than he has ever done to help it... I don't know that there has ever been a worse guy asociated with boxing and that is REALLY saying something... Blinky Palermo was less corrupt

Honestly, they wouldn't have been much outcry if the fight was stopped after Tyson floored Douglas.

I'm not calling his entire refereeing career into question but that one fight was bullshit and he deserves to be criticized for it. You don't count 2 seconds for every 1 and you don't let a man get up and the count of 9.75 (in otherwise he reached TEN but just didn't say it).

if you count like that for EACH GUY, you can count as long as you want

it's HIS discretion, not Don King's

Tyson had the same consideration Buster got

no. Tyson was counted out just after the count of 9, Douglas was afforded an entire count after 9, just the ref didn't say "ten".

Anyway it's moot, Douglas was the better man on the night.

Only because Tyson was expected to win big, and Douglas was supposed to be nothing more then a sacrificial lamb anyways.

There shouldn't be any outcry that the fight wasn't stopped either.

I remember watching the fight as it happened and thinking Douglas was done to. He had fought an amazing fight, but Mike had done the inevitable and finally caught up to him. Even if Douglas got up, it was going to be lights out before the next couple rounds were up.

It's a Heavyweight Title fight. You don't quick count a guy who had been dominating the fight up to that point. You give him the full 10 and you let him fight on if he's able.

Tyson, at that stage of his career, doesn't need any additional help from a referee. To his credit he told King to shove it, when Don wanted to tip the scales in his favor after the fight.

What made the fight so amazing was that Douglas came back and resumed his dominance when everybody watching that fight KNEW Tyson was finally going to do what everybody thought he was going to do when the fight was signed in the first place.

............and damn you Sly, for wanting to take one of the most amazing moments in boxing history away from us, for something that would have just fed into Tyson's self-destructiveness even more.

You think he would have "turned his life around" if it wasn't for that loss? :nono:

Don't pretend both knockdowns were the same. Tyson might have been up, but he was in far worse shape then Douglas was, when he got up. Guy didn't even know where he was, or which way his mouthpiece went back into his mouth.

Yeah. That 23 year-old version of Tyson was over the hill by then.

Tyson is the only fighter in history who gets a pass from his fans because of an approximate 16 month prime.............and all other poor performances falling outside of that small window gets discounted from his career standing.

But sometimes the lesser man, on the night, rightly wins (Jackson-Graham for example). Tyson was robbed of a win, IMO (even though Douglas was beating him up).

Dude...no one is sayign that Tyson was SHOT that night (or past prime) we are just saying that he wasn't at his best. Big difference.

If you want an example to explain this look at Ray Mercer vs Jesse Ferguson.

Mercer wasn't yet washed up, still prime (his fight with lennox occured AFTER this fight) but Mercer was ill-prepared and under-motivated that night. Who would deny this.

Fuck Douglas! Anyone who performs that way on their FIRST DEFENSE (vs Holyfield) didn't deserve to ever have the crown. The GREAT Mike Tyson was robbed that night.
