    agreed

    I'm not saying the ref made a bad call, only that a lot of panicky ref would have stopped it early seeing he was in trouble (a la Tzyu-Judah). I'm of the opinion that you gives the benefit of the doubt to a fighter in a championship fight

    I saw a clip where Dundee admit he split the gloves. he said the gloves were split and he "helped" it a bit. Then said a guy was sent to the back of the arena to get another pair but he said Ali could fight with the one's he had on.

    The point being I don't believe that happened all with the minute you're talking about.

    When I have time to look I'll try to find when Dundee said that. It's been awhile since I've seen the clip but I seem to recall Dundee indicating Ali had extra time to recouperate...almost as if he were saying he helped the split in the gloves...sent the guy to the back of the arena to get a new pair, when the guy gets back he says no we will fight with these.

    Years ago on Christmas Day ESPN ran Muhammad Ali fights all day...which is ironic considering he's Muslim. :stir: I recorded the entire broadcast and I'm certain that's what Dundee said.

    Perhaps all of this happened within a minute....I don't know.

    ==================================================

    http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=3158201

    After toying with Cooper for four rounds during their bout at London's Wembley Stadium, Ali was clocked with a thunderous Cooper left hook that, he said later, "made me feel as if I had gone back and visited all my ancestors in Africa."

    Slumped on the canvas, his arm draped over the second rope, Ali was saved by the bell. Dundee leaped into the ring and dragged him to the corner, where, according to urban legend, the trainer cut Ali's glove, called the referee's attention to the fact that the glove was split, and caused a delay during which a new glove was placed Ali's fist and he recovered his senses.

    <!-- begin inline 1 --><!-- PULL-QUOTE (BEGIN) -->

    <!-- PULL-QUOTE (END) --><!-- end inline 1 -->Not so, insists Dundee.

    "That was something they gave me credit I don't deserve. I didn't cut the glove," he said.

    Rather, he had noticed in the early going that the glove was split slightly along the seam, the leather sticking up. As he writes in his book, "Well, who knows when something like that might come in handy?"

    "So, he kicked the hell out of Cooper in the first round, he got back, and I made sure the referee wasn't looking my way," he recalled. "I said, 'Keep your hand closed,' because if he'd have kept it open, the crack would have shown. And then when I saw an opportune moment [after the knockdown], I called the referee over and said, 'The glove's split.' I put my finger underneath the leather and lifted it up.

    "The idea was, I went to the referee, and he went to the commissioner. The commissioner went to the back room looking for gloves. He came back, the referee told me, 'Angelo, we don't have any new gloves.' I said, 'That's OK, we'll use these.' I never took them off."

    I never saw Tyson come within a million miles of defeating fighters as good as DeJesus, Leonard, etc... Nor do I recall him dominating a division on a 6 year reign of terror

    I've seen that fight. I have it on DVD but have only seen the ESPN version not the live broadcast version. All of those ESPN fights have been edited in some form.

    understood

    but he is clearly confusing events, because none of that occured between rounds, which means that my original point that Cooper was in no way gipped at all stands

    I've heard Dundee say it. Honestly, I think he's full of shit..........legend or not.

    Either he remembers wrong, or he bought in to the urban legend and spun it a little to make himself look good and to make it sound a little more believable.

    There really is no evidence to say otherwise.

    search for cooper knocks down Ali... there is a non-ESPN classic version up there, I just watched it a week ago before I thought about posting this (I wanted to make sure my memory wasn't faulty)

    anyway, you can clearly see no editing has taken place, the audio and video are seamless and doesn't it seem odd to you that the announcers make NO MENTION of this alleged delay??? surely if a big-mouthed kid everyone was waiting to see humbled had been given 2 minutes or so to get a change of gloves, the announcer would be discussing it when the next round began?

    Musze, go to about 19:35 on this and you see the knockdown, the end of the round, the announcer mentions the glove and NOTHING ELSE HAPPENS... between rounds time is absolutely normal, the 5th round starts up right on time

    That's true. People make out that King was some sort of a gamebreaker, a paradigm-shifter. King was good at his job but there had been some massive promotions in the sport before Don King. Zaire was a big deal, a very impressive, multi-national piece of theft, and a triumph of logistics and technology {most of which had nothing to do with King} but none of that is to say some other promoter couldn't have wangled it.

    Let's not go all Thomas-Hauser over it here folks. King is very good at what he does but he is yet to reinvent any circles.
