Morales didn't have the smarts to do Hamed like Barerra did... he very likely would have had to get off the floor to win

The common opponents are Pacquiao, Jones, Ayala

Everybody loves the "Erik KOd Barerra's daddy in 4" stuff but it was nearly two years later and Jones was coming off of a knockout loss to Kennedy McKinney and 9 months of inactivity... Ayala is a wash, since Morales beat him first and MAB did it more thoroughly, but a full two years later...

The only thing left is Pacquaio, who Erik went 1-2 with and Barerra went 0-2 with... essentially you are using that one win to claim Morales was "Clearly" better... that's kind of ridiculous...

Didn't have the smarts? Morales certainly knew how to outbox guys and was fully capable of doing it.. whether he'd want to fight a cautious fight like Barrera did is another matter and doesn't really have anything to do with smarts.

    Re: Jones/McKinney -

First, Jones was dominating McKinney before he gassed out from trying to put him away in the 3rd and got stopped himself. He wasn't in shape for the fight, it was reminiscent of Wlad/Brewster.

Jones/Morales was a completely different story, Morales was clearly just another level of fighter.

Second, if you want to talk about the layoff before he fought Morales, Jones was out for over a YEAR before he got the Barrera fight.

Finally, if you want to downplay losses based on being old or washed up or whatever, Morales lost to Zahir Raheem before he lost to Pacquiao in a fight where he looked fat, sloppy, and old. The most meaningful fight Morales and Pacquiao had was the first one, and Morales won that fight.

Oh, and Ayala was done by the time he fought MAB. He retired after that fight because he "didn't want to become a punching bag."

Smarts has a lot to do with it... when you are in with Hamed, who was a monstrous hitter, it is smart to be tactical and keep your defense tight... Go ahead and name me a fight where Morales ever sustained a full-on gameplan for 12 and didn't get stupid at some point and trade... you trade against Hamed, you give him the chance to do the only thing he always did well-PUNCH... that is a dumb idea

Honestly, your hatred of MAB is clouding everything here... he is at worst 2-1 with Morales, he got the better of it and was plenty good without him as well... to say Morales is clearly superior is not a very sustainable argument... I don't see Barerra losing to a scaredy-cat scrub like Raheem because of failing to make adjustments... Morales lost the fight because he was trying to be macho and allowed himself to be annoyed by Raheem's negative style

As for Jones, it doesn't matter if he was dominating McKinney, the KO was devastating... Jones wasn't coming off of such a loss against Barerra

Come on. Morales knocks out any version of Junior Jones. Poison was decent, but Morales was in another league, and that showed when they fought.

At the end of the day.. Barrera's best win is Morales, but Barrera is not Morales' best win.

(And it's not just my hatred for Barrera, I'm also a huge, huge fan of Erik Morales :))

Alright, he falls into that time frame so I have to give you that. But it's clear in retrospect that the first Pacquiao fight is his last hurrah. You have to be pretty damn unforgiving to hold the Raheem fight against him and even so, you still only have two fights over a stretch of 13 years or so.

When Morales turned southpaw in the 12th while ahead on the cards and let Pacquiao tee off on him, everyone in the room was going crazy. Not the smartest thing to do.. but that was what made Erik Morales, Erik Morales. Morales is a certified badass, a legend who we should all feel privileged to have watched throughout his career.
