that is kinda why his resume (full of losses) is over stated. he was getting paid a kings ransom to face tough foes, who were also getting rewarded accordingly. when jones jr was at his peak he wasnt nearly the draw, so upper echelon foes were hesitant to get thrashed for lesser compensation. same goes for mayweather jr. before he faced delahoya. same goes for marcellus johnson to a far higher degree of low reward/high risk. how many boxers in their prime wouldnt have fought any of the guys delahoya went up against, for tens of millions?
That's missing the point. Oscar also made big money fighting no-hopers like Campas and Castijello. If he wanted to use the Frank Warren approach to match making his win-loss ratio would look much glossier and he'd still have been able to retire a pretty wealthy man.
DLH was popular enough and had the kind of crossover appeal that would've allowed him to have been paid a "kings ransom" for fighting Joe Blow. Instead, he went out of his way and chose to challenge himself.
bullshit. after the whitaker fight he went ahead with a two year binge of no hopers before the public ridicule became so strong he had to face quartey and trinidad
he made triple and quadruple those sums to fight the ones who ended up whipping him. i dont consider that bravery
Now you're just hating. DLH didn't have to fight Floyd, Hopkins, and Pac. Yeah, they were all big money fights, but they were the toughest fights available and he went out of his way to make them. He could've easily stuck with beating up second tier guys if he'd wanted to, not necessarily no-hopers but "acceptable" opponents (a la Floyd/Pac at this moment).
Dela was VERY Opportunistic in Making those Fights Though...For Example, Bernard had to CONTRACTUALLY Weigh-In @ like 157lbs, IN DEFENSE of his 160lb Title...Pac had JUST Fought @ 135 in his Previous Fight & was a Complete UNKNOWN @ 147...Hell, Most Fans RIGHTFULLY Expected Dela to DESTROY Pacquiao... Even Floyd had to Weigh-In @ the HEAVIEST Weight of his Career, to Face Dela...Yes, Dela Fought the Tough Guys, but he Made them JUMP THRU HOOPS Beforehand... REED:Lok:
agREED... All of the Examples R TAINTED @ the Very Least...Dela Used his LEVERAGE to Get Every Presumed Pre-Fight ADVANTAGE that he Could... REED:kidcool:
Those are good points, but re: the Pacquiao fight, De La Hoya himself hadn't fought at 147 in a decade. And as we saw, he wasn't able to make the weight without giving something up.
Juan La Porte lost to... Salvador Sanchez Eusebio Pedroza Ruben Castillo Wilfredo Gomez Julio Cesar Chavez Azumah Nelson Kostya Tszyu ...but still, that's a pretty impressive crop of names. And La Porte was himself a very good fighter with a meaningful career.
This is at the tail end of his career though, what about Quartey, Whittaker, Trinidad, Mosley? What hoops did they have to jump through?
Seriously???...They Didn't have to Jump Thru Hoops, Per Se, but Dela was VERY Careful about WHEN he Fought them... Uuuuh, Quartey had ALREADY Been Exposed a Bit by Jose Luis Lopez AND he had Been Inactive for a Year, by the Time Dela Decided to Fight him...Whittaker was 137 Years Old, Trinidad was Having SERIOUS Problems Making 147 (In Fact, he'd ALREADY had a Fight or 2 @ 154 AND he Never Fought @ 147 Again, After the Dela Fight) & Mosley was a Mere 2 Fights Deeeeep @ 147, After Moving Up from 135... So like REED Said, YES, Dela Fought the Big Names, but he was VERY Opportunistic in WHEN he Decided to Fight them... REED:mj:
With the exception of Ward (due to potential) not one of those guys are hall of fame material. Unless you count Kessler in Denmark and Pascal in Canada.
Don't forget...Mosley moved from 135 with the sole intention of fighting Oscar. Prior to oscar fighting Trinidad he swore he wouldn't fight Shane because "you'd say I beat up another little guy." Oscar "loses" to Trinidad....comes back against Derrell Coley to win a title in the first of his "Four Fights, Four Knockouts" campaign of 2000 then selects Mosley as a June opponent.
Mosley fought Wilfredo Rivera in his first fight at 147....was shown the week after DLH-Trinidad then fought Willy Wise in January of 2000....the DLH match was in June. How is he not correct? Also, see my post about how the Mosley bout came to be.
