Which was more brilliant?

Benitez-Duran, or Kalambay-McCallum 1?

IMO, these are the two most beautiful boxing exhibitions over the distance. Both El Radar, and Kalambay put on absolutely FLAWLESS performances.... which was better?

I was thinking of adding McGirt-Brown to the discussion, since thats also a flawless boxing clinic, but its not AS impressive considering that Simon Brown isnt in the same class as Duran, and McCallum.

 

I haven't seen either, so I couldn't possibly comment.

You're missing out. I would imagine that both are on youtube. Trust me, both are worth viewing multiple times. Two beautiful virtuoso boxing displays. I'd say Benitez's performance was slightly more electrifying though. Duran(despite what his groupies might say) was in shape, and "up" for the fight.... but he simply had NO answers at all for Will.

 

Wilfredo is definitely a guy I need to check out more. I've only seen his fight with Ray Leonard, which, I feel, was stopped early. Apart from that, not much. Too bad what happened to him in the end. Arum was indeed a worm. Anyfight where Duran loses or where the "Valero" is brought out of him is worth watching.

Disagree big time! The Duran fight was Benitez at his TRUE best. He beat Duran alot more clearly than he did Palomino, and it goes without saying that Duran was better than Palomino.

The Palomino fight IMO his 3rd best performance. The Cervantes fight was his 2nd best performance.

Duran at 154 is a sometimes good fighter, it's less impressive to me... if you make that fight in 1979, Benitez is not winning

 

Benitez over Duran was more impressive to me. The Duran, at 154, who fought Benetiz was the soft, flabby, almost disinterested version. It was impressive that Benitez was able to beat a guy that normal ate counter punchers for lunch with his swarming style and amazingly underrated footwork. But I was disgusted by the Duran that fought Wilfred.

But on the other hand, Kalambay benefited from home town judging in a fight I thought McCallum narrowly but clearly deserved to win. Who's ever heard of 4 or 5 rounds scored EVEN in a title fight?

I'm not taking anything away from it, I just don't think that Roberto Duran by that stage of his career was anywhere near the fighter he was even three years earlier

Make it 1977 at 140 or 1979 at 147 and I think Duran definitely comes out on top either way

No, because that was a glitch in Duran's 1972 run. It was clearly NOT the best Duran.

ahhhhh Wilfred El Radar Benitez! Such a great fighter that never fought to his full potential.

 

It's not an excuse, it is his own fault. But it's well-documented that Ray Arcel yelled at Duran in the dressing room while Duran was in tears, telling him "you lost that fight in the gym!" Duran proved that to be true and that he was fully capable of beating DeJesus when they rematched.

And yes, DeJesus was an excellent lightweight.

 

What's FUNNY about All of this is that it was Usually Duran Fans that CHASTISED REED for "Idol Worshipping" Roy Jones Back in the Day, yet Ya'll Do the Same Shit EVERY BIT as MUCH, if Not More...When the Topic was Roy, Guys Said "NO Fighter is Invincible, ANYBODY Can B Beaten, There's ALWAYS a Guy that Has your #, etc."....

DeJesus did very well in both rematches...even though he was beaten brutally he held his own.

And he had real excuses in those fights (strung-out) unlike durans excuse (blew up between fights)

I agree Duran never beats Hearns. But there's really no shame in that.

Duran is a legend. He is also one of the very very very few lightweights who have both dominated their own division and offered something significant outside of it.

Benitez arguably lost to Bruce curry and Harold Weston, if you want to get into semantics

 

Duran was on an island for convicts when he trained for Benitez.

He was in good shape.

 

Let's also not forget that 154 was hardly Duran's best weight.
