It's hard to say whether or not RJJ remains over-rated. Many have gone to under-rating him since his losses to Tarver and others, while some continue to act as if a prime RJJ were unbeatable.

Regardless which camp you're in, do you agree RJJ was picky and overly careful about who he fought and when?

yeah, used to be a fan of RJ, but the man was a clear cherry picker.
His resume is not that bad, but he didn't have the drive and the will to prove that he was truly great

He definitely, for whatever reasons, missed some fights he really should have made, fights that had he won them would have silenced his critics (like me, for example)

He was a great fighter, but I always disliked him, his attitude, his style, everything

Jones certainly didn't go out of his way to take on the best possible opposition, but at the same time there weren't a lot of true threats to him for long periods of his career either.

    Fuck Off, Doub...

Will YOU Finally Admit that You WEREN'T Being "Facetious" when YOU Picked WHOlio Gonzalez to BEAT Roy Jones???...Also, Despite your Lifeloooooong CONTEMPT for Roy Jones, his Career DEFECATES on the Career of Jose Luis Castillo AND Margarita (Yes, even your Precious, Unbeatable "Loaded Wraps" Margarita)...

    Precisely...

@ 168, Roy Jones is BLAMELESS...Frankie Liles had ALREADY Lost to Roy in the Ammy's...Nigel Benn Wanted NATHAN to Do w/a Roy Jones Fight...Chris Eubank WOULDN'T Even Fight James Toney, so there was NOfuckingWAY he'd Fight Roy Jones...Steve Collins Only SERIOUSLY Entertained a Fight w/Roy YEARS AFTER it was Relevant, @ 175 No Less...

@ 175, Roy Fought Everybody EXCEPT for MichalSHITski...Roy Takes HALF the Blame There, but the Thing is, Marquee American Fighters RARELY Fight Overseas Anymore...Dela NEVER did it...Floyd's NEVER Done it...Sugar Shane???...Fernando Vargas???...Roy's Only Fighting Overseas NOW Because he Needs the Money...

Roy Straight Up BACKED OUT of Fights w/Buster Douglas AND Vassily Jirov...A CRUSIER & a HEAVYweight...But Other than those 2, REED Can't Co-Sign on Roy "Cherry Picking"...

Could Roy Jones have Done MORE in his Career???...Yes...But he Did MORE than Enough to Illustrate his GREATNESS...He's THE Most Talented Fighter MOST of Ya'll have EVER Seen...

    "Ya'll Musta Forgot"...

I know of Double L love affair with Castillo, still, I fail to see why it's relevant to this discussion

Reed please,.. to be fair to Double L, he withdrew his support for Margarito as quick as could be expected,.. while you clung to Floyd up until the day he cancelled the fight at cowboys stadium over an ethical drug testing practice... :nono: and you ADMITTED IT ....( :bears: )

Jones didn't fight Benn, Norris, McClellan, or Eubank. He did, however, fight Toney and Hopkins, who were at the top of their divisions at the time.

Anybody remember why that was? That would be because Benn, McClellan, Norris, and Eubank were all under contract to Don King. That was back when The Ring, KO, Boxing Monthly, and a few other magazines were detailing the contract issues that many fighters had with Don King. Hopkins also refused to sign with DK until late in his career as did Toney.

Roy could have made fights with DK fighters, but that would have meant being under contract to Don King---which he did not want. Back then Don held a middleweight tournament with the two best fighters in two divisions, Jones and Toney, not participating. Instead, they fought each other.

That's a good defense of RJJ resume, but my main beef with him was his reluctance to leave the LHW division, even if it was clear there were no challenge left for him at this weight (bar for a DM fight, wich both didn't seem particuliarly enthusiast to pursue) , so whe had to watch him dominate average competition for most of his prime years.

He also had a case of inflated ego, wich made him unable to accept fight , unless every thing he asked for where given to him.

No, Hopkin wasn't at the top of his division at the time he fought Jones

I believe they were the top two contenders fighting for a vacant belt.

I don't recall if it was only the IBF that had them ranked that way though.

That's right, Jones was. Hopkins was definitely top 5 though, so perhaps I should say NEAR the top of his division. Jones fought Hopkins for the only belt not controlled by DK.

It was the IBF, and it was also the only belt that Don King didn't have his hands on. Jones was advised by the Levins and Hopkins had Butch Lewis.

I know it was the IBF, i just don't recall who was ranked where. (not by santioning bodies necessarily, but who where widely considered to be the top 10 middleweights at the time)

I'm waiting for him to start the "Oscar Broke My Heart" thread.

Oscar finally copped to cheating on Mille and being a cokehead.

I must say...Manny REALLY lays asswhuppings on guys...so much so both Oscar and Hatton turned to coke to deal with the ass kickings laid upon them.

I think Hopkins signed with Don King as part of the deal to get the Trinidad fight.

But your point is correct...Don always took options on the fighters that fought his.
