Hoffman unreservedly. A brilliant, brilliant actor.

If Hollywood had a HOF, Hoffman (he should be the one known as, "The Hoff,") would be 1st-ballot m
    aterial.

I'd give it to Hoffman by a nose (no, that was not meant to be a racist remark)

I find Sean Penn a detestable, self-absorbed assclown, but then again so are all actors... but he is very good at his job

Sean Penn would rather be a director then an actor, that much is known.

He's good at both and can be a great actor when he wants to. Problem is he seems disinterested in acting sometimes........especially when he realizes he's in a piece of shit, like "The Interpreter".

Hoffman has been in plenty of shitty movies, but I don't think he's ever phoned it in. Not that I recall anyways.

Yeah, Hoffman probably takes it but that is no shame for Penn who is a superb actor too

Sean Penn was BRILLIANT as "Spicoli" in "Fast Times @ Ridgemont High", but he's Taken Himself Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay Toooooooooooo SERIOUSLY Ever Since....

REED's Favorite Penn Flick Ever is 'Bad Boys'...

Penn's best performance is probably Dead Man Walking.

Personally I think Penn has the greater depth. With the exception of Rainman, Hoffman comes off as the same guy in nearly every movie for a very simple reason. He never changes himself. He always has the same mannerisms movements and habits. Even his voice which is very unique is always at the same pitch and never changes with character. Hoffman just goes in and acts the part but he never immerses himself into the character I feel. Don't get me wrong he's very good at delivering his lines and acting but as far as getting into a character and completely reinventing himself I think Penn and many other actors have him beat in that area.

    So I go with Penn.

I disagree he was "UNHoffman like." To me it just seemed like Hoffman in a comedy. Don't disagree they had fun with it though.
