this should be interesting. another question should be whether irish even watched corrales-castilllo 1 live.
There was a pretty weird 12 months in heavyweight at the time: Bowe-Golota I, Tyson-Seldon, Bowe-Golota II, Lewis-McCall II, Holyfield-Tyson II, Lewis-Akinwande.
Norwood/Gainer is a good example someone already mentioned. That was a total, "WTF." More recently, Mares/Agbeko was a WTF fight. SRL/Duran I was WTF.
i dont think they should have stopped it on the Castillo fight i know he was basically out but not OUT
I was there, front row, with a bag of popcorn shouting out loud "the gumshield renders all hence void", I'm surprised you missed it. :wack: Ali vs Frazier 1971 Ali vs Frazier {Manila} Hagler vs Hearns Duran vs Ray Leonard, Part Un. Ray Robinson vs Gene Fullmer, II.- a fight which must surely shit on the "WTF" happened there moment of ANY fight. There are others too which I would rank higher, but I wasn't at them in person so I couldn't possibly comment. :shit:
Take for instance Ray Robinson vs Fullmer....and let's just examine the WTF moment of it all......you have your backdrop, namely Ray vs Fullmer, part one, which suggests that Ray is largely past it, not his usual self, and that Fullmer is too strong for him. Consider further that both Ray Robinson and Fullmer had far greater innate pedigree than either Castillo or Coralles. Consider further that neither of them every fought Floyd, which helps clear the mind. Yet further consider the very bright start Fullmer made, where, to everyone watching, it seems another 15 rounds of grief await Ray. Bang. It's not just that Ray hit him with the best shot ever thrown. It's more that Ray did it to a guy who had basically overwhelmed him the first time out and seemed to be doing it again. It's that Ray had stopped a guy who NEVER got laid out like that, EVER, not even by Dick Tiger.
For me it's Jones-Tarver II. When Tarver cracked Roy, Roy completely disappeared from the frame. In that instant I said to myself..."where did Roy go?" I couldn't believe my eyes. That was more shocking and more of a "WTF" moment than Tyson-Douglas. Tyson-Douglas you saw Mike taking an ass kicking long before the final KO shots. Jones-tarver II...it came out of nowhere.
Camera made it look like Roy had dropped onto his haunches, Pernell Whittaker style. Thats ok. Cameraman got his a few moments later.
:: Not quite. :: But neither guy was as skillfull as a Fullmer or a Robinson and that stoppage was a clinical and as shocking and as unpredictable as they come. If they had in-game-betting, online, back then, Ray would have been infinity-to-one to land a single 10-count shot on Fullmer. But he did it.:kick:
You seem to have moved the goalposts and conflated the two topics as it suited you. The question was five fights that are better than Corrales-Castillo I overall, not which is more of a WTF moment. Ali was rusty for the first Frazier fight, and Duran-Leonard I didn't have the same kind of sustained back and forth, give-and-take action, Duran controlled the fight for the most part.
listen here, little bitch. by live i meant watched as it occurred. not necessarily in attendance. none of the bouts you selected were as exciting and action packed, with perhaps the exception of hagler-hearns that contained 1 round of comparable back and forth action.
He means live as in live on TV. Not after you already knew what happened. Makes a huge difference in this case.
more fighters should be so, "skilless." fighting effectively inside requires everybit as much skill, if not more, than doing so from the outside. it's not as if castillo and corrales fought sloppily, or exhibited bad technique. and they certainly demonstrated exquisite timing. you had two fighters trading efficiently and accurately thrown punches for nearly the entire fight. what those two did that night was to juggle neatly the burdens of offense and defense, and each showing an almost unprecedented faith in himself to emerge victorious. there was cheating on the part of Corrales. sure. but it was not an early stoppage. and it certainly wasn't a fight between bums.
That's like saying Nagasaki and Hiroshima didn't see any fighting, apart from that one explosion down-town.
There is nothing about that in the OP. In fact, Clay vs Liston is mentioned as an example. Now, if I were to say to you that Vitali vs Byrd is a WTF moment, of largely congruous occurrence, you would, in your Canadian brilliance, scoff and sneer. But they are largely identical in the "WTF" nature. The unexpected suddenly happened. In fact, Vitali was winning, which made the retirementall the more shocking. But I wouldn't besmirch the forum by dragging up such a comparatively meaningless fight, fought as it was between two generally lesser combatants in Byrd and Vitali. Likewise, for those who saw it live, Fullmer being 10 counted off one single hook must surely have been as great a WTF moment. But now we have additional factors being introduced such as seeing it live.:nono:
Good synopsis of that fight Fullmer said that when he came to, he saw Robinson jumping up and down and thought "he must be in tremendous shape, doing exercises between rounds" and then his manager grabbed him and he said "what happened?" and the manger said "they counted 10" The hook was absolutely perfect, a ridiculous shot
Yes, but was it quite as WTF as a man with a hawaii shirt and man-boobs giving vague instructions to "fucking get inside on him" to a guy who had already been beaten up by Joel Casamayor? I should wager not. :nono:
