and if you didnt enjoy corrales castillo due to the final round, it still had several other rounds that were as good as the first stanza of hagler hearns. then again youre a guy who is entertained by the klitschkos so we obviously have differing taste in exciting boxing.
Hagler-Hearns didn't have any real WTF moments. Just high-octane class. I am not entertained by the Klitschkos.
disagree the sheer class of Hagler and Hearns makes the enthralling savagery of that first round all the more astonishing Corrales and Castillo were both good fighters, but nowhere near those two guys and while they certainly had a brilliant fight, it was not unexpected because of the limitations of each guy... it was bound to go that way... the last round is what separates it from other fights Hagler and Hearns were two GREAT fighters with GREAT skill sets engaging in a toe-to-toe brawl for three full minutes... THAT is what makes it special
Everyone expected a brawl with Castillo and Corrales.. but not like THAT. And it wasn't just two clubfighters slugging away either. Hagler & Hearns was fought at a higher class, yes, but ultimately it was still mostly round 1 that made it stand out. Once Tommy'd broken his right hand, it was just a matter of time. Hagler/Hearns round 1 wasn't toe-to-toe all the way through btw, it didn't start out like that and there was a stretch in the middle of the round where Hearns was moving while tagging Hagler with vicious shots. (but I do agree Hagler/Hearns ranks)
No one is saying Castillo/Corrales were clubfighters, but they were not Hagler and Hearns, and they were expected to brawl It's become hip to downplay round 1 of Hagler/Hearns, because it has been so talked about... but honestly, when has there ever been a first round like that between two fighters that great in a fight that hugely anticipated? I'm sorry, but there is nothing that compares
I'm not downplaying it at all, it's one of the greatest single rounds of boxing ever, if not the greatest. I didn't realize it'd become hip to do so, I've never seen anyone downplay it.
if anything some people downplay the actual full fight, not the first round of hagler hearns. great fight, i'll be honest i didnt see it live so that may have some effect on my opinion. as far as fights i didnt see live Id rank Gomez-Pintor as the best of all time.
that is a great fight, but Gomez was so dirty... he must land 15 forearm shots in that fight, whenever Pintor comes on
Who introduced this notion of seeing the fight "live"?? Surely we can be expected to discuss "WTF" moments as they were interpreted by other generations....
You think Corrales/Castillo would have the same impact on a fight fan if they knew what was going to happen?
No reason to exclude fights we didn't see live if they still have high what-the-fuck-a-bility for us.
Of Course it WOULDN'T... If U ALREADY KNOW that Corrales WINS via 10th Round TKO, there's NOfuckingWAY the "WTF" Factor is the Same... REED:dancingBaby:
:: A headstart often makes up for speed. :nono: Don't try to muddy the waters chap..........the thread pertains to "shocking" fights....I was then challenged to name 5 "better fights"...a complete tangent of a response, which I entertained regardless. Not satisfied with this, new elements were added to the mix, about "seeing fights live" etc. Reed is correct. The "WTF" element of Castillo vs Corralles is severely diminished by not seeing the fight live. He is correct. 100% correct. BUT Reed is ASSUMING that this {seeing it live} is the only element. It is not. The RESULT in Tyson vs Douglas ALONE would have constituted a WTF fight. Waking up to see what had happened, was a WTF moment. 9/11 was a WTF moment. Whether you saw it live or woke up to read about it 10 hours later.
Precisely. In-Fight, Must-See-Live, What-The-Fuckability: Tyson vs Holyfield II, Corralles vs Castillo. Post-Fight-Just-Read-About-It-Now,What-The-Fuckability: Tyson vs Douglas, Tyson vs Williams, Clay vs Liston. Tyson vs Douglas is both. It would be like..."what the fuck is happening here"....then Douglas is down, and you think its OK, then he starts kicking the shit out of mike, and then you think "WTF", and then Douglas wins, and you think "WTF" and then you tell your bud who doesn't have PPV and he's like "WTF" ::
:: it was obvious to all and sundry that Norris was faking and quitting. Vitali vs Byrd is a good example. If you saw it live, you would be taken aback at how Vitali just didn't come back out at the end of the 9th/start of 10th.... If you read about it in a paper 2 weeks after it happened, you would have been very surprised also.
Tszyu vs. Judah had a WTF moment when Judah got up and his legs took on a life of their own. Golota/Pouha was a WTF fight, when sneakily, Golota bit his opponent on the shoulder like a dog would. PBF/Chavez made me say, WTF when Chavez's corner stopped the fight before he'd taken any exorbitant amount of punishment.
Oh, I see.....well I hope you never qualify as a trauma surgeon....."you son is in ER, he snapped his neck, but he's OK apart from that"..... Doub....Mayweather was snapping that guys head back routinely by the final round.
It's More of Doub's BIASED Brand of BULLSHIT... He Probably Actually THOUGHT Chavez would BEAT Floyd & Therefore was Disappointed by the Result...But Instead of Giving Floyd CREDIT for an Impressive Stoppage, Doub is QUESTIONING the Stoppage Itself... REED:dancingBaby:
Floyd vs Chavez is a good example of a guy being "In" the fight, and "Ostensibly" in no difficulty, who in fact is actually really getting his ass kicked. People put too much emphasis on knockdowns etc. Or don't know boxing. Or hate Floyd. ::
"What I was disagreeing with, if REED had bothered to REED the context, was the notion NOT that it was a WTF moment, but that it was the greatest fight of all time. " The fuck is the matter with you guys? Jesus.
i think Tyson-Seldon was a WTF fight Seldon talked mess before the fight about "doing it for the kids" he looked to be in great shape... trained hard... then Mike missed a shot over his head and his forearm grazed Seldon's forehead and he was DONE! the Haglar-Hearns fight was WTF because normally 2 guys on that level feel each other out some... the opening bell Haglar threw a big hook right off the bat and i was like "WTF"
Let's not get all sensitive REED. I'm not Harold Lederman. I didn't think Chavez was winning the fight. Clearly, he was losing. I was just surprised (WTF) by the stoppage. I could've predicted the fight would get stopped eventually, but was surprised the corner stopped it when they did. You and others can pretend you're wise and smart and felt too the fight should've been stopped, with the benefit of hind-sight, but the plain fact is, the referee saw no reason to stop the fight and there was no expectation on the part of the commentators that there could be a stoppage, and Chavez was indeed having pockets of success. And so when his own corner stopped the fight, when Chavez appeared alert and able to go on, I'm sorry, but it was a little surprising. And I should remind you that I was a PBF fan at that point in his career, when he was willing to face the best fighters out there. It was only after he moved to 147, seemed to fight everyone except the contenders in his own division, and retired after every fight, that I began hating PBF. I couldn't care less that PBF is a piece of shit and a perfect example of what's wrong with this country. But as a boxing fan, I do care that a part-time fighter who seems to run from every big challenge out there insists on calling himself the best and acting like his undefeated record means anything. If ODH hadn't predicted JMM would beat PBF, I'd say he summed it up best with his dismissal of PBF's recent competition.
