None other than Jeff Monson. Hey at least he's fighting a heavyweight this time around. But ya who cares Fedor is done . I wouldn't call him shot but he just isn't that great in 2011. Great for his time back in pride nowadays he's just an average heavyweight
LOL... Fedor back to fighting the caliber of fighter that helped him build his reputation. Prediction: Fedor wins and proclaims he's back.
I think that Fedor was simply more advanced back b4 the sport exploded. He is not the GOAT,,,,and never was. WE just didnt know it then.
Fedor was a good fighter, and is a legend of the sport, he has never evolved, he's the exact same fighter he was 10 years ago. Not a thing has changed.
For fuck's sake, he's had one of the longest careers in MMA history. He ain't young anymore. Not everybody can keep the same level of fitness as Randy Couture. If he were in his prime, he would still be undefeated. He would beat any and every HW out there today if he was younger.
I agree with you to an extent, in terms of overall skill, style, fighting capabilities etc he IS exactly the same as 10 years ago. He hasn't evolved like other guys have and like the sport has. Back then he was leading the pack in terms of versatility and overall fighting ability, but the sport quickly caught up. However it has to be said, he is clearly not the same guy physically and/or motivationally. Nowhere near as sharp and explosive as he was in his prime, that was evident even against Arlovski and Rogers etc.
Oh please, Velasquez? Dos Santos? Overeem? We'll have this conversation a couple of years from now and we'll see how the current top guys will be fighting on undercards.
indeed, this is ridiculous, Fedor is far from the fighter he used to be, the speed and explosion are all gone, it got nothing to do with the level of opposition getting better. He had more of a young man style, relying more on his explosivennes and athleticism than on technic. You have to be either blind, biased or plainly an idiot to believe he's the same as he used to be. Now the haters want to come and discredit him for losing 3 in a row at the tail end of his career, all the while ignoring his tremendous reing wich won't be repeated any time soon at hw imo. Most of these guy's were the one who thought Lesnar was that big unstoppable monster who kept improving, in other words, they bought the line Zuffa fed them. No surprise they are eating it up all again regarding Emelinenko. Sure, JDS, Velasquez or Overeem could all beat a prime Fedor, but they would all be underdogs and for good reasons.
Look at who he was fighting prior to coming to SF. Not exactly the top guys. I guess he's great for beating up 300lbs Sylvia, and Arlovski who everyone knocks out. Maybe it was the Lindland fight, or Hong Man Choi that impressed you? Dude I am giving him as much credit as he deserved. He wasn't fighting top guys for years. Look at his resume.
His last 10 fights, which spanned from 06 to now. Mark Coleman Mark Hunt Matt Lindland Hong Man Choi Tim Sylvia Andrei Arlovski Brett Rogers Fabricio Werdum Antonio Silva Dan Henderson. Basically his claim to fame is beating Cro Cop and Big Nog by decision. The rest of his resume is littered with utter scrubs and undersized japanese guys.
Fedors the goat, whoever says otherwise don't know shit about mma and its a shame how the mma community is kicking him while he's down, its like they waited his whole career for this moment.
This sums it up right here and your right its thee exact same people who are bashing fedor who was praising Lesnar, that's why I just laugh off what they say.
Not me, I have said the same shit about Fedor for years. I'm not calling him a scrub or anything, his resume is good not great.
Exactly. Just because you're honest about Fedor's resume doesn't mean you think Lesnar was a world beater. My problem in this whole discussion is how it is considered taboo to say anything negative about Fedor's resume. Then again, the people that were going bat shit when Fedor knocked out Arlovski and Rogers, are the same ones that quickly dismiss his recent loses to him being shot and over the hill. Let's be perfectly honest, Fedor has had soft touches since Cro Cop back in 2005. He really hasn't been able to compete at the highest level since that point would be my guess. The fact that he lost recently has more to do with his level of competition as it does with his aging. He's not fighting the Mark Hunts or Hong Man Chois of the world. And the results prove it. I know it's kind of a no-no to imply that, but it's true.. .
That's what pisses me off. People talking like there's this golden era of HW's right now that will crush whatever memory we have of the old guard. Guys who will never be in the same level of dominance Fedor was. Cain, Dos Santos, Lesnar, Carwin, Silva, Werdum are very good fighters but not exactly what I would call above Fedor's level.
They will never achieve the same level of dominance as Fedor because they won't be fighting guys like Hong Man Choi, Zulu, Hunt, Goodridge etc as "title defenses". Jesus, Cain could own the heavyweight division for a century if he got a steady diet of Coleman, Ogawa, Martins, etc. No, neither JDS or Velasquez will dominate like Fedor did because as long as they're in the UFC, their next fight will be against the top ranked contender.
Silva and GSP has been fighting top contender after top contender and they remain clearly at the top. That's the level Fedor was on. You won't see that on the HW division because the roster is stacked with good but not great fighters and the title will keep changing hands frequently.
Umm, Silva and GSP are on a different level completely from where Fedor was. That's the whole point. Silva and GSP aren't facing completely one dimensional fighter with primitive MMA skill sets. Fedor did what Silva and GSP are doing but he did it against scrubs primarily. Let's put it this way, as bad as you might think challengers like Leites or Cote might have been, they were ions better than Zulu or Hong Man. Hell, from a skill perspective, they were better than middle of the road guys on Fedor's resume like Herring and Lindland as well. Fedor thrived because he was ahead of the curve in terms of being well-rounded. That's not the case today. Fighter, on average, are just better MMA fighters today. Period.
And the UFC talent pool is overrated as hell, there's only a hand full of fighters that are worth a fuck in that org the rest just get that zuffa hype. The UFC has there share of bums too
Actually only Hunt from that list got a title shot. Oddly, for whatever reason Fedor only defended his title like 3 or 4 times.
