As someone else said, Merchant adored Whitaker

I like that Merchant asks the tough questions that the fans want to know, but he just comes across as too negative most of the time IMO.

He's just a grumpy old drunk.

    Precisely...

Brian Kinney Asks "Tough Questions" Too & has Even had On-Air Altercations w/Floyd, but Kinney is Rarely a PRICK about It...Merchant Clearly DOESN"T Like Today's Era of Boxers on a Whole...Who Wants to Listen to a Guy Comment on Sport he DOESN'T Even Like????....On Fightnight Merchant Acts as if he'd Rather B ANYWHERE ELSE But Ringside, Unless it's Gatti-Ward, Wlad, etc...

Merchant and Lampley are both terrible.

Having said that, I found yesterday's exchange entertaining.

Man, no one wants to hear that tired shit anymore. Man up and test, prove ur clean in the ring instead bitching out and filing a court case.

    Please...

The bias around here is sickening...

    This is just simply wrong.

Larry finally realized that Eubank was "for real" after he fought Carl Thompson in the penultimate fight of his career. Before that, he always thought Eubank "was a joke."

There is simply no excuse for this level of ineptitude. To say that a boxing commentator who actually did say this at ANY time of the commentator's career knows boxing better than all the others is wrong.

Sure, Merchant got somewhat better in the 00's, but he is more of a goofy poet when he's at his best. It's never his knowledge that is particularly insightful or poignant, it's just the way he expresses it that can be impressive. Of course, that's ignoring all the other times that he makes you roll your eyes with his jibberish.

Larry isn't getting the respect he deserves from most of you.

Though he's obviously on the negative side, he's arguably the best boxing broadcaster ever.

He has wit and charm, and he actually knows boxing more than any other regular commentator.

Plus has has some fucking balls. The man is EIGHTY years old. Some 80 year olds are in retirement homes etc, and Larry wasn't even phased or intimidated by Floyd's aggressive outburst.

If Floyd did that to that faggot Kellerman I guarantee you he would shit himself, get all nervous and start apologising profusely to Floyd for upsetting him, then get on his knees and start sucking Floyd's dick to make up for it.

    Larry is the fucking man.

Regardless of what you think of them personally, let's be real - Kellerman has forgotten more about boxing than Merchant will ever know.

I disagree, I think Kellerman is a fucking idiot, regardless of what blanket knowledge he may have amassed.

Maybe knowledge is the wrong word in regards to Larry, but he has more common sense than all then others put it that way.

Kellerman is a retard. He thought James Kirkland was an elite fighter, and he's just wrong all the time, he doesn't know what he's talking about.

  13. loadedgloves

    loadedgloves "Twinkle Toes" McJack

I'm not saying Kellerman is a genius. But Merchant is worse. A lot of people thought Kirkland was elite - assuming Merchant knows/remembers who Kirkland is, he probably did too. Hell, Merchant thinks Arturo Gatti was an elite fighter. He's terrible to watch generally, grumpy old fuck who hates anyone who doesn't fight like a caveman. He might have liked Pernell back in the day, but who knows, maybe he got worse with age.. nowadays all he does is complain unless it's a toe-to-toe brawl.

He never thought Gatti was a elite fighter. He just liked watching him fight, same as a lot of people.

    Come on

Kellerman is a goon, he knows NOTHING

Yeah, if he fights about 10 more good fighters several times each and beats them all:laugh11:

  17. loadedgloves

    loadedgloves "Twinkle Toes" McJack

If that's the case, Merchant knows LESS than nothing.. do you really think Merchant knows more about boxing than Kellerman?

IIRC Merchant's take on the Klitschkos and the heavyweights is the same as Irish's .. he thinks boxing is doing just fine

  18. cdogg187

    cdogg187 GLADYS

Kellerman's take on the Klitschkos has far less to do with an actual boxing analysis and far more to do with personal biases... he's every bit as shrill, motivated by favoritism and ignorant of the physical act of boxing as Merchant is

  19. REEDsART

    REEDsART MATCHMAKER

Perhaps, but @ Least he's an AMBASSADOR of the Sport he Speaks On...Merchant Seems to B on a Campaign to DISSUADE Viewers from Watching Boxing, Most Times...

I'd actually forgotten about Kellerman's take on the Klitschkos, but all the more reason to deem him superior to Merchant imo

Seriously though, I honestly don't really think much of either guy .. I just think Merchant knows nothing about boxing whatsoever, and not only that, he doesn't really care.

  21. cdogg187

Kellerman is an ambassador for guys he personally likes, I don't see him as this objective, positive guy

Agreed. He might be right or he might be wrong, but he's a fucking buzz kill. people don't pay 60 bucks to have somebody tell them, implicitly at least, that what they're watching is garbage.

  23. mikE

    mikE "Twinkle Toes" McJack

I like how the defenders of Merchant are trying to put it on Kellerman. Kellerman knows far more than Merchant about boxing and surely has since he was a teenager or younger.

The question shouldn't be which announcers know more than Merchant about boxing, but who knows less. The answer is much briefer that way.
