In the post fight interview, when asked about the stoppage Gomez replied along the lines that 'They asked me my name, where I was and everything and I answered correct, but they stopped it anyway' ??? Clearly he was out at the time it was stopped, the ref was WAY closer than any of us, and must have seen his eyes were f'd or something that we didn't. He clearly wasn't aware of what was going on when it was stopped.
I hate Gomez. I wish the fight would have gone longer so we could have seen a hightlight reel KO. Having said that, Ginger is still a fraud.
bad stoppage. gomez was winning rounds and in the fight. he could have certainly continued at that point. i suspect he'd have been KOd eventually but that aint justification for stopping the bout then.
agREED. I had Gomez up at the time of the stoppage. He was on his way out, but a more definitive stoppage was in order. That said, fight shouldn't have come to that if Canelo is even half as good as the hype suggested. I was impressed by his finishing instincts, but not so much with his overall performance against an ordinary - and made-to-order - opponent.
For what it's worth, Gomez was hurt and defenseless when Alvarez attacked him to set up the finishing sequence. A truer sportsman would have waited for Gomez to clear his head and properly defend himself.
come on, I'd expect that from Neil, not you I'm a bit surprised by the cheap shot, frankly, didn't know it was like that
Ha, I was just saying it in general, not in response to your post. It just happened to follow your post. And of course, you know I'm just kidding although now you ruined an otherwise terrific fishing expidition.
has fightbeat sunk so low that early stoppages are justified on the ref being the closest man to the fighters ??? It's a pathetic cop out that can be applied to any stoppage in history, even the most corrupted one. This stoppage to me is on the border of being flat out criminal
Not at all, The point is, that in the post-fight interview, Gomez' answer to that question leads one to believe that he was in fact out on his feet at the time of the stoppage. It appears that he believed the fight was still on, when in fact the doctor was asking him the "post KO" standard questions.
ok, I was lazy and misinterpreted your post. Sorry. But I still disagree with the stoppage thought, the quotes just show that he kind of lost the plot for a second or, but this is expected from a wobbly fighter
