Unrelated but I was going through some of the pre fight predictions from Floyd-Corrales

    "Corrales by decision."

Personally, I picked Floyd to bamboozle Corrales and he did just that and then some

I predicted Floyd by late TKO at the time and was ridiculed by my fellow posters on S/O. Who's laughing now...

 oh, the irony... the one time Kellerman doesn't pick the fast black fellow in a big match, the guy puts on a display that Willie Pep would have have been proud of

Yeah but you KNOW opinions were split right down the middle on that one. It was as hotly debated as Tito-Vargas. Were you on S/O at the time?

I don't remember for sure, I think I joined in mid 2001, long time ago

But there's always idiots (like Kellerman) who can't see the obvious

True but that doesn't change the fact that it was even money in general perception.

    For example...

I knew that Tito was going to knock Vargas the fuck out. I had no doubt. I had predicted that it would happen by the 9th round actually (and it probably would have if Tito hadn't been thumbed in the eye in the 3rd)...but this doesn't change the fact that the general perception was that it was an even money battle.

Oh and Trinidad was De la Hoya's and Vargas' Hearns.....even though Hearns is more formidable.

"The oddsmakers who are calling this a pick'em fight have no balls. How can Corrales NOT be the big favorite? I have to go with Corrales. Corrales is what the old-timers call the dangerous beanpole. Saddler, Hearns, Arguello,M. Spinks, are just a few dangerous beanpoles that spring to mind. When theylose, it is to big bangers, which Mayweather is not. (The Pep victory over Saddler is the exception that proves the rule; and remember, Pep was rough!)
Can Mayweather win? Not really; his only chance is to stink the joint out,
Pee-Wee Whitaker style, and run and pitty-pat jab all night. I don't think
he can do that, so my prediction is as follows: Corrales will beat down
Mayweather within 6 rounds. And it ain't gonna be pretty."

My boy EVERLAST had a similar prediction. Even those picking Floyd thought that a KO/TKO was outta the question. My stellar prediction on that fight solidified my reputation as the premier fight prognostigator on the internet.

Because Floyd's phony 24-7 attitude is doing the job.

Do you remember my Predo??? I said Corrales early or Floyd late. I reckoned Floyd could take him out if it dragged on.

I'm not happy just blaming Floyd, which would be the easy and acceptable way of doing things. The truth of the matter is that Floyd, as a boxer, is under a simple obligation to make as much money as easily as possible. Now, Floyd has made a fine art out of this, but HBO have been there every step of the way assisting him. Floyd is not the sole beneficiary of this practice but he is the main one.

Lampley was at it from early on Saturday, crowing on about how massive Ortiz was going to be, with these "functional" weight advantages. The motivation was clear: make out that Ortiz was some sort of a massive physical specimen, that Ortiz was hongry, that Ortiz was this that and the other.

It seems to me that as long as there is some sort of controversy, some sort of calamity, so long as there is some raging issue for the public to debate, that this will suffice. A headbutt here, a cheap-shot there, Larry being told to fuck off, beautiful. So long as there is something to talk about aftewards, the bullshit of the previous 8 weeks can be neatly swept aside.

    Its junk.

    Good points.

    This is especially insightful:

The truth of the matter is that Floyd, as a boxer, is under a simple obligation to make as much money as easily as possible.

How can anyone expect him to do otherwise? I will bitch and moan because he won't fight Pacquiao. And I'm free to hate him for robbing us of that fight. But given his decisions, I can't question his rationale.

And HBO has become even more enabling of PBF since Pacquiao signed with Showtime. Consider Lampley's calling Ortiz the biggest welterweight he's ever seen. First of all, that's ridiculous. But more importantly, it's an obvious retort to those claiming PBF has fought smaller opponents. Is it Lampley's job to use hyperbole in order to silence PBF's critics?

But Lampley's attempt to shape reality to suit HBO's agenda with his flowery vocabulary and over-reliance on compubox is nothing new.

What's new is 24-7. No longer does it have to be about boxing. Instead it can be about the dynamics of dysfunctional families, thug-life, nihilism and of course, mysogyny.

This is exactly why I said earlier that I wished Floyd still had to box for a living because he'd be pretty good at it...

So basically, we have ourselves to blame. Ourselves being those who are willing to pay and pay big to watch PBF fight anyone but Pacquiao.

We can talk about how HBO has allowed it to come to this, and the fact PBF isn't a true competitor, and that promoters are too greedy to work with each other.

But at the end of the day, we can be sure everyone's happy except us, the fans. HBO makes a mint. The promoter makes a mint. The "opponent" makes a mint. And of course, PBF makes a mint. Us, we knowlingly waste $60 for something that's not worth $20.

Why do we do it? Because they sold the shit out of the thing and we like boxing.

What's funny is the most competitive fights on TV these days are generally on Fox Sports Net, Saturday nights.

If Teddy was 30 years older Floyd might make it out of there in one piece.
