No one seemed to notice that Georgie Benton passed away recently

So I figured I'd pay a little tribute to the man, who was both a terrific fighter (one of the best not to win a title) and one of the best trainers of all time

Among the notable fighters he defeated were Freddie Little, Joey Giardello, and Jimmy Ellis. A savvy, innovative defensive specialist and a crisp counterpuncher, Benton had a lot of difficulty getting big fights as he was often viewed as being too much risk for too little reward... A close call came when he seemed to be working his way towards a title shot, only to lose a split decision to Rubin Carter, which ultimately was the end of his chances from then on.

Though much admired as a fighter, Benton really made a name for himself as a trainer and strategist for fighters such as Bennie Briscoe, Johnny Bumphus, Rocky Lockridge, Mike McCallum, Mel Taylor, Willie Monroe, and most notably Pernell Whitaker (whom Benton referred to as "My masterpiece")

RIP to a great boxing man

I wish there were about 50 George Bentons training right now, we would be seeing a great revival of skills

Who needs skills when a Liev Schreiber voice-over can make you out to be the greatest thing since.....Liev Schreiber.

garbage movie (though Washington, as always, an excellent performer) ... for the real story, watch the Giardello/Carter bout on youtube and you'll see Giardello won by about 6 or 7 points:lol: quite unlike the "robbery" in the film... but hey, who cares if we denigrate a hall of famer who didn't go to jail in order to make the audience feel even worse for the main character who we have already santized to begin with
