That was a real trashing. Delahoya was like a sitting duck in that fight. He had absolutely no answer for Pacquiao's vicious attacks. Probably DLH's worst beating.

Put a younger DLH in there and you got a fight

You can't fault Pacquiao on the performance, or for DLH taking the fight, but in all honesty looking back on it, the match-up was always going to prove way too much for DLH and there was only going to be one winner.

one of the greatest rounds of all time. real entertaining, thrilling stuff :bears:

Easy to say in hindsight when pretty much everyone saw it as a grotesque mismatch in DLH's favour beforehand, plus DLH didn't "take" the fight, he made it. Probably because Pacquiao was p4p #1 after Floyds "retirement" and would be a big name on Oscars record he could easily defeat due to sheer size

Disagree. It was far, far too one-sided. DLH was taking a solid beating. He had nothing left.

True. Oscar should NEVER have taken the fight. He should have hung the gloves up after floyd soundly beat him.

Looks like you missed my edited post. My point was Oscar didn't TAKE the fight, he MADE it. It was seen as a bit of a sick, opportunist move to get a win over a fighter who whilst excellent and a big name, was massively outsized.

I faulted Oscar big time for taking the fight at the time I thought it was a farce. I still fault him a bit to be honest because he obviously thought it'd be easy and he could get a wee hit of prestige on a smaller man's back.

The sound of Arnie saying 'wrong' in a deadpan voice is ringing round my head

    EXACTLY...

Its easy to look back now and say "Oh its obvious Pacquiao was gonna win" but if somebody could dig up the topic, I think we'd find that it was INCREDIBLY one sided in favor of De La Hoya amongst the posters.

Most were going with Oscar on sheer size alone and the fact that Pacquiao had been wobbled by Marquez. Even with De La Hoya's horrible showing against Stevie Forbes, most still insisted De La Hoya was gonna knock Pacquiao out.

I had picked Oscar via decision based on the lack of killer instinct he had showed against Forbes. And I also felt that going to 147 wasn't a good thing for him at this point in his career and that it would weaken him but I didn't think it would apparentley weaken him as much as it did.

I know it's easy looking back on it now, sure, but take away the size difference and whether Pacquiao's chin would hold up vs the bigger Man and you looked at it stylistically before Pacquaio and DLH met, you could see where the fight would favor Pacquiao considerably (After observing DLH vs Forbes & Pacquiao vs Diaz).

Forbes did not have great head movement, handspeed or lateral movement, yet he still managed to land effective shots to DLH's head and body. He blocked alot of his shots too and marked DLH up. DLH did not look great, he held his hands low and did not look the most mobile fighter.

Diaz was the bigger Man vs Pacquiao and looked what happened there. Diaz was not a sitting duck. Pacquiao made him look a sitting duck due to his superb movement, variety of shot selection and speed.
Many predicted Pacquiao would not knock Diaz out and look what happened. Many picked Diaz to go the difference but lose by UD or close decision.

I'll admit, at the tme I talked to a lot of m friends in the boxing game, pros, trainers, people round the industry..

More than one of us said that it was a total mismatch! Lol

I remember saying...even if DlH was the same size.. It was a mis match.. He was just a much much better boxer!

What I didn't realize is just how bad Dlh had faded

  15. word.

I mean who really would have seen that coming? Pacquiao is tiny compared with De La Hoya.

  16. word. That's exactly how everyone saw it.

Even with the outcome as we know it I still think it was a sick twisted sadistic opportunistic move by De La Hoya.

    Size matters, but speed kills.

I hate it when this fight gets downgraded retrospectively.

    It was an outstanding result.

or when the sheer embarrassment suffered by the victim is downplayed retrospectively.

It still beats a gift draw against Sergio Mora...& begging Pacquiao to touch gloves for twelve of the meekest rounds of your one-trick career.

Edit: Well, either the Pacquiao fight or jitterbugging about the ring as Vernon Forrests plaything in their rematch were the meekest twelve rounds of Mosleys career. I cant decide off-hand. LOL.

Vernon Forrests toy. At the absolute peak of your career. Oh, dear

Remind me how much better Mosley did against Pacquiao than De La Hoya, Neil. LOL.

Come on Ramone! Forrest's toy had already whooped Oscar's ass.

He killed DLH to the body.
We really learned late in DLH's career how vunerable he was there. (Granite chin, though).

he certainly did better, when he was even older. he wasnt a defenseless sack of shite, like the finnoch.

Fought at 147 lbs. Drained the shit out of Oscar. Same as Margarito and Cotto. Drain them and beat them. That's smart.

I think we can all learn something here...Neil thinks Mosley did BETTER than De la Hoya.

Both fights were Pacquiaos, every second. De La Hoya didnt make the distance and Mosley did, but equally, Mosley hit the deck, and didnt have to make a weight he hadnt in seven years.

  28. Ramonza Soliloquies

He did no such thing. It was a competitive loss, which De La Hoya avenged over a steroid-enhanced Mosley in the rematch.

  29. There's one word which describes Pacquiao perfectly..and that video posted by Neil emphasizes this:

    Relentless

This little flip is one of a kind.

Looking back, yes. But let's not forget that ODH was decisively favored to win that fight. Let's not rewrite history here.
