romero turned out to be over rated but lets face it, salazar beating him was a big upset at the time.

but to call it the biggest upset since Douglas/Tyson is just flat out ridiculous, that is my point

    and, also, consider the source

Like Steve Dave mentioned, the closeness of the first fight dilutes the shock of the victor in the second fight. However, if Tarver had knocked Roy out like that first time round, would you guys consider that AS big an upset or possibly bigger than Tyson-Douglas?

I didn't have the first fight really that close. Jones won a good 8 rounds imo. Tarver rallied in stages, but showed too much respect to Jones. Jones was fucked late tho and if Tarver had gone for it more, he probably would have stopped Jones.

The knockout in the second fight was a real shock. Tarver ruined Jones.

  6. Not for me. For me the first fight was only close because Roy wasn't used to the weight. I thought Roy would walk the second fight.

    Hatton V Tzsyu ?

  8. Not that big of an upset IMO. Tszyu the clear favourite, sure, but there was alot of buzz sourrounding Hatton at the time, albeit if only from the British fight fans.

Besides, you have to win fair and square for it to count here.

Phillips vs. Tszyu is more like it

There is a constant 'buzz' around uk fighters... maybe not the biggest since the Tyson fight but pretty big in my opinion.

Hatton gets no credit in a SnD thread :nono:, plus I picked him to win. Not a big upset in my eyes.

you guys dont think Keith Mullings, a guy with less than 20 fights, best known for controversially losing to raul marquez, knocking out then top 5 p4p guy in Terry Norris, TERRY NORRIS! wasn't the biggest upset since douglas/tyson?

I didn't even remember it being an upset of the year until i was looking to see what the odds were for the fight. I didn't find them. I always bring up Romero Salazar when these upset threads come up. Let's see...

    http://www.fightbeat.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26604&highlight=romero+salazar

    mikE:
"If biggest means least likely, then a lot of these don't belong.
Benn/McClellan and Phillips/Tszyu were only like 6-1 fights and Lewis was only a 2-1 favorite over McCall.

Biggest one I know of was Danny Romero losing to Willy Salazar. Another would be E. Clottey beating Abdulaev."

See cdogg187, I'm not some stupid sheep like you and steve_dave. You two are really fucking morons. You don't like some of my positions or opinions, I don't care. I'm always willing and ready to discuss them with people who are willing to and preferably capable. The problem is that you are proven stupid and you don't bring anything to the table.

Part of the problem is that you don't understand my positions you don't agree with. The other part of the problem is that you are too stupid to figure them out. Some of my best internet boxing friends disagree with me a lot of the time. That's cool. But it's cool because they have some substance with the criticism of my position and the backing up of theirs. You twits don't.

I don't get the ridiculousness of mikE listing Romero-Salazar. To this day, I don't know a soul who honestly saw that one coming at the time. I'm not even sure odds were placed on that fight.

Romero and Tapia were undefeated, rising stars at the time and Top Rank's plan after Romero-Salazar was a low-rent PPV featuring both, followed by an HBO d/h, and then a head-on collision in '96. Romero's loss to Salazar erased all of that (or at least delayed by 18 months or so), and the eye damage he suffered nearly ended his career.

Sure, Romero turned out to be overrated. At the time, though, that was a monster upset. So much that nobody thought twice about naming it Upset of the Year over Benn-McClellan, just to put in proper perspective. In fact, people were less surprised that Frank friggin' Bruno claimed a HVY belt than they were over Romero losing an ESPN-level mismatch.

people who write it off because mikE said it simply didnt watch boxing back then. or realize what a journeyman salazar was, or how highly thought of romero was.

you're missing the point... no one is questioning it was a big upset and yes I was a fervent follower back then so I'm well aware of the circumstances surrounding the upset... you answered the question in the first half of the first sentence.

Salazar-Romero was a HUGE upset worthy of being mentioned in this thread. It's only not a big upset to complete revisionist and boxrec historians. Romero was very highly thought of at the time (whether right or wrong).

I can't imagine what the odds were for that fight. Hell Wolak was a -500 favorite for his last ESPN fight. WOLAK!!!

neither steve_dave nor I were in any way disputing that it was a big upset

    not once

you have to understand the dynamic of mIKE, who essentially goes into every possible thread with the thought "hmmm... what can I say here that no one else would ever think to say?"

the two of us are poking at him for THAT, not because the fight wasn't a big upset... furthermore, the biggest upset possible in a division like Jr. Bantam does not create the same size wave as a half-as-shocking upset in a bigger division... part of what makes an upset big is how it perceived by people that aren't as tuned-in and informed about the sport as all of us here are...

To the masses, for example, Holy/Tyson is a bigger upset than Salazar/Romero for the simple fact that the masses have never heard of Danny Romero... history will judge it as the bigger event, even if technically it's not anywhere near as big an upset... like it or not, that is a factor when determining something like "Biggest Upset Since Douglas/Tyson" ...

You and steve_dave are simpleton fucks. I get it.

Still, you should save your attacks for times when you have a better argument instead of trying vainly to discredit whatever I say. It makes you both look like bitches. Actually, I don't care if you look like bitches or not, but I would prefer that my posts not be the pavlov stimulus to your stupid whining every time.

Oh, your response is transparent, pathetic backtracking, btw. Carry on.

Isn't this a site for real boxing fans? Not just what the "masses" think is a big upset?

I came into this thread looking at it from a pure Vegas/Online gambling odds standpoint. Where the biggest upset I have seen was Sanders/Wlad. But I also said i didn;t keep track of all the odds, I bet the Romero/Salazar odds were ridiculous.

i;ve known mikE for years and he always mentions this fight - i think he was very aware of the perception of both fighters when the fight happened and it stuck with him. it's easy to look at boxrec and say "oh Romero was not that good that upset doesn't really count" and be totally unaware of what a true upset it was.

i don't keep track of any of the ongoing fueds that go on here - it's all pretty silly imo. so i don't know what history you have with mikE - but the upset itself deserves inclusion. honestly wish i had kept record of the vegas odds on that match, as well as some others.
