Pacquiao vs Delahoya rnd 7, beating of epic proportions

Discussion in 'General Boxing Discussion' started by Rainmaker, Oct 5, 2011.

  1. Manny dominating and stopping De La Hoya was, IMO, the most impressive result of his career and defines his greatness. Beating Hatton, Cotto, Margario etc is merely icing on the cake.

I won't, but hasn't there been fights in history where a smaller guy steps up in weight and beats a bigger guy due to his style and speed?

Hoya was an old man, in all fairness

    so was Mosley

impressive performances by Pacquiao, but let's not pretend that either of these guys was anything close to prime

Yeah but who did you pick to win DLH-Pac at the time, cdogg?

I assumed that Pacquiao would be very uncomfortable fighting at that weight, so I figured he'd lose

but to me, that is rather irrelevant when determining the state of Oscar de La Hoya at that time...

It's sort of like Calzaghe/Lacy... I gave Lacy a good shot at winning because I thought so little of Calzaghe, not because I thought that Lacy was anything other than a one-dimensional walking shit with a hook... seeing it as a pick-em doesn't make Calzaghe's win some amazing achievement any more than Pacquiao's battering of an old, tired celebrity is an amazing thing

It seemed an easy pick, simply because Manny was so small, I don't think people were pciking Hoya because they thought he was still a major player

delahoya was and then got the shit completely kicked out of him. in the most one sided, embarrassing loss of his homosexual career.

mosley was a heavy underdog, and just came to survive and collect a check. in doing so, he was able to somewhat negate pacquiao's offensive output.

why is the latter more noble than the former?

  8. Neil

    Neil tueur de grenouilles

because mosley didnt get severely thrashed, beaten within a inch of his life, and actually landed punches in his match? i dont really know or care about noble, but his loss was far less embarrassing at the time considering the circumstances going into each fight.

But Cdogg, you still picked De La Hoya to win at the time, you can pick apart any win in hindsight, it was still mightily impressive

    he didn't even try, man

    it was an impressive performance

but what does that have to do with hoya's condition?

was he not a washed-up fighter by that point?

    delahoya tried? :atu:

he took his beating... Mosley smiled a lot and seemed to come to an agreement with Pacquiao a few rounds in "listen, I'm just going to quit without quitting, please don't hurt me"

    you have very strange standards

Mosley's display in that fight was one of the most pathetic and gutless I have ever seen... the fact that you hate Oscar de La Hoya so much (I don't like him either, frankly) that you are willing to prop up Mosley's disgraceful showing against Pacquaio is insane to me

  14. I agree with you 100% here Cdogg.

De La Hoya tried, just couldn't deliver. Mosley gave up the moment he was knocked down (personally I think he gave up before the fight started). Mosley didn't even try to win, his entire strategy was to not get knocked out...by his own admission.

    Exactly

and I'm not an Oscar fan by any stretch

  17. Neil

the fact that i knew going in mosley didnt have a chance in hell made it so his performance wasnt disappointing.

i find it all the more shameful that a guy who you consider having tried to win wasnt able to land any punches, yet a guy who quit did. go figure.

do you objectively believe Mosley gave more of an effort than Hoya did?

I rate them about the same. Mosley had just enough to get out of the way whereas Oscar didn't have the legs nor energy to get out of the way. (that damn Ostrich meat) :kidcool:

Take either Oscar or Shane from their first fight and they handily beat manny.

I couldn't have disagreed more with you. Oscar didn't really try to get out of Pac's way. I also dont think they would beat Pac 'handily'. They would make a better chance but I think it is outrageous to claim they would handily beat Pac.

Agreed, but I don't think manny beats either at their best.

Dunno man. Pac faced an aged Mosley that night. A younger Mosley would be a completely different kettle of fish altogether.

  25.

    You're dreaming.

  26. SO?

Manny would have still beaten a prime Mosley who was FAR from invincible.

Vitali dominated a Shannon Briggs who was "a completely different kettle of fish" to the prime version of the 90s. Guess what..Vitali would have beaten the 90s version also.

If the Muhammad Ali of 1974 would have faced the 43 year old Foreman he'd have won a clear decision....but Foreman would have proven tricky in spots with his ramrod jab and patience. Guess what Ali beat the Prime version and by knockout.

Mosley, even in his prime, wasn't a clever boxer. He was always a stylized slugger..stylized in the sense that he didn't have the ugly brawling style of most sluggers, but instead had fast hands and "cute" moves. Nevertheless for all intents and purposes he was a brawler, without the commanding jab and ring generalship of a true boxer and he was also a SPURT fighter.

Manny would have beaten him blue...even that version. Prime Shane struggled with the workrate and brawling of Wilfredo Rivera. Come on now.

He's not beating "1000 punches a fight" Pacquiao..who would match or beat him for handspeed also.

    disagREED

It's possible but i certainly don't think either beats Manny "handily" If they won they would have earned it and the marks would show.

It's easier to break down Vitali - Briggs as briggs was pure garbage and stylistically Vitali's style is all wrong for Briggs.

  29. Prime De La Hoya has a much better chance than a prime Shane, stylewise.

I say this because Oscar could have boxed and had a great commanding jab. His height and jab would have given Manny problems but it would have still been a very difficult fight for Oscar, one that if he won he would have won by the skin of his teeth. Manny's southpaw style and constant movement, coupled with his fast hands and unpredictable attacks give Oscar hell at any point in time.

Think De La Hoya-Whitaker. Whitaker was still good, but was getting older. Whitaker was about Manny's height and size and was a southpaw. Many still think Whitaker won that fight. At the very least oscar struggled with him.

Now Whitaker is a different fighter to Manny, no doubt, but he's still a southpaw with good movement...and he didn't even punch as fast or as hard as or as often manny and so his advantages in defense and boxing acumen would be a wash when you consider Manny's advantages.

Agreed on the bolded part but not with the Whitaker comparison other than the southpaw angle.
