I always find it funny how you're willing to turn to amateur accomplishments to lionize crap fighters to suit one agenda or another. Oh, and you probably never actually saw it, but Brewer clearly beat Ottke in their first fight. Ottke also got a gift against Reid (plus ridiculous hometown officiating) and didn't exactly dominate Johnson, either. Ottke would've gotten punked badly by Jones Jr or Hopkins. Hell, Tarver and Calzaghe would have kicked the shit out of him too. Are there less deserving fighters on the ballot? Probably. That still doesn't make Ottke HOF material, though.
I think one of the few people who would disagree is the referee of a certain Ottke fight. Jake, he doesn't get to vote does he? ::
now, based on who is already in the hall, there's probably 20 guys there that "deserve" to get in and the rest a case could be made for
just wanted to add that Joey Archer was a brilliant pure boxer... couldn't punch to save his life, but the guy could dance all night In a real, strict hall of fame, I wouldn't vote for him under any circumstance But he would have beat Graziano 15 rounds to 0, Zale too
While i agree Curry merits HOF consideration (especially before others nominated) i don't think there are political reasons behind it. Your comparisons don't add up and the flag image is overkill.
People keep bringing that up, but I think we're slowly but surely moving away from that mentality. No doubt it will resurface next year when Gatti's on the ballot, but improvements have been made. The BWAA having a Bio page for every HOF nominee, limiting the number of inductees from five to three, tightening up BWAA membership credentials (and thus, the voting process)... can't erase the past, but definitely moving in the right direction for the future.

i dont need to preach to the choir with him. it is the goofy fucks like rafael who began watching boxing in 2001 that i need to convince.
Those are all of the voting members. There are more that are "Auxilliary members" but are not eligible to vote.
Lem Satterfield is actually the best person to approach to start a campaign. Lives in B-More (not DC, but close enough), is quickly becoming every promoter's favorite writer and has a huge following. Oddly enough, Rafael almost fits that description (lives on the other side of DC, in N. Virginia), but like you sad, not the true fan everyone thinks he is.
Ha. Yeah, would LOVE to hear anyone justify that non-vote. But fairly certain both were truly unanimous selections. Was actually surprised that Tszyu received as much support as he did.
Neil don't listen to him. I rented the place across the street from Jake a few years back. Every day i would wave and say "what do you think Terry's chances are of getting into the hall Jake?" At first he was was amused, then annoyed. Police were called a few times but i talked my way out of the misunderstanding. Jake moved. I got a job at a fast food restaurant near where he works. There is a lot of other things that happened in between but i can't get into them mostly for legal reasons. What matters most is Terry Norris is in the HOF.
Say masterful brilliant legend one thousand times every day for a year,.. and maybe you'll come around son. The more those undesireables pop up, the more they're going to have to padlock the door to the cubby house aint they.
I hope so, Jake, the sport deserves to have at least one thing go right once in a while... with its incredible history, boxing deserves an exemplary hall of fame
You'll be happy to know that Dan Rafael has in fact cast a vote for Marcellus Joseph Johnson. I know of at least two BWAA members who have not (though they're also on record saying they'd vote for him over Gatti ::) and three more (besides myself and Rafael) that have voted for him. My guess is that the 2012 class looks like this: Thomas Hearns Myung-Woo Yuh and either Mark Johnson, Naseem Hamed or Donald Curry (not sure why, but have a feeling Curry might get some votes this year than has been the case the past several). Each voter gets to vote for up to 10 candidates. I voted for six this year - Hearns, Johnson, Yuh, Naz, Pone Kingpetch and Hilario Zapata. Was thinking about selecting Curry, and gave brief consideration for Vazquez Sr. but skipped over both.
What I always laugh at is how the old guard thumbs its nose at the way the sport is covered today, yet they're the ones responsible for guys like Graziano, Jose Torres, Ken Norton, Billy Graham and others getting in. They also elected every notable welterweight and middleweight from the SRR era and every HVY from the Ali era for no other reason than being Top 10 fighters in such eras. I think a case of too many writers being granted BWAA membership w/o any sort of screening led to guys like McGuigan, Saad Muhammad and (cover your eyes, Whiskey) Terry Norris make it in on the first try. Ever since Jack Hirsch became BWAA prez, things have tightened up considerably.
Tell me about it, tell me about it. I see the Shemisur Shemirovs and Makfantnhov Mummarovs of this world are doing quite nicely, quite nicely at the World Ammy's. Of course, its not been the same since basketball became an amateur sport....the odd Cuban here and there, but Socialism has softened them, not at all the fighters they used to be under Castro. That said, there is at least ONE Ukrainian of whom they can be most proud: Vasyl Lomachencko. They ask me what the face of boxing is going to be and to them, I say THIS:
Indeed. It is absurd... Though I personally think that Saad Muhammad is more deserving than some of these contenders and Terry Norris on the basis that for about 20 fights he was a great fighter up against remarkable competition... I rate a guy like Saad with a brief run of compelling greatness against top class opponents followed by a depressing decline than say, a Virgil Hill with a bunch of title defenses over atrocious opposition and fewer defeats
Oh I agree that MSM is more deserving than most. Just saying, was surprised to see him get voted in the first year his name made the ballot.
