Lewis' KO of Rahman was exquisite

I've probably watched that fight 500 times. There's always time for Lewis/Rahman II.

I was a fan from the moment I saw film of him... He was a good contender, then he was a great champion

    You know it.

Lewis' dismantling of Golota was great to watch.

"I don't understand. I will destroy him," said Golota regarding his pre-fight thoughts.

Yep, and it probably qualifies for a "virtuoso" performance.

Rahman, after all, was a brand new champ, from the USA.

Lewis was facing a guy that had cleaned his clocked and roughed him up in a Studio pre-fight, pushing him onto his back no less and generally embarrassing him for the 2nd time in a year.

Lewis came out, established his jab, reduced Rahman to fumbling and pushing both his arms out to block the shots, totally dominated and took the guy out clean. He reduced Rahman and Rahmans corner to a befuddled amateur mess and he did it against the aforementioned background.

If anyone should have been tight and cautious and mistake-prone , it was Lewis.

    Perfect performance.

And this is the point I made earlier.

Its more than what goes on in the ring. Its what goes on in the ring coupled with the buildup, the background, what other people expect of the performance.

The World and its Mother knew that Floyd was going to be too big, too fresh, too tall, too long too heavy, too skilled, too good at the weight for JMM.

But a lot of people thought that Duran might embarrass Ray Leonard again, that the big queer Lewis was going to get KO'd again, that Mosley was just far too good for Forrest.

Mosley was on EPO and Forrest was an oft-avoided, under-appreciated pug. To come in and reduce Stanozolol Shane Mosley to repeated glove-touches in the space of a few rounds via the simple expedient of some sickly timed uppercuts and right hands was something very special. For Lewis to lay out Rahman like a cheap prayer mat was special. For Ray to make Duran, the ultimate bully, wring his hands and walk away, was special.

These are the virtuous performances, the special performances.

Not the recent fare we have been served up.

I was asked to name fights in support, in authority, of my position.

    I was asked, requested.

When I was quizzed about my being so naughty and not liking certain fights, certain scenarios, I was asked to elaborate further, which I did.

I think Vitali does the "abandon" thing every now and then. There probably isn't a meaner fighter out there right now. That said I can see where you are coming from.

And I can't blame either Klitschko for not having passion about what they are doing. They have rightly figured out that boxing is a business where your hide exists to be tanned for the benefit of scribes, pundits, managers, promoters etc.

Get what you came for, extend the middle finger, and then get the fuck back out.

In addition, the slow creep of neurological research, backed up as it is by the Michael Watsons, Freddie Roaches, Ali's, McClellans, Jimmy Garcia's etc, is inevitably going to affect some fighters more than it does others. Some guys just aren't destined to wind up looking like JC Chavez Sr or sounding like Meldrick Taylor.

    no

the die was cast in your initial post... you immediately went into the usual routine... "fucntional... opponent compromised..."

no one had said anything about any recent HBO fights, no one had praised that sort of thing... you again made the ASSUMPTION that no one is capable of thinking for themselves save you, that we all are in cahoots with Jim Lampley and Dan Rafael

It was a virtuoso performance. Dominated the 4 rounds from start to finish. You can include Golota and McCall (even if he wasn't fighting back, he was getting outclassed), as his other virtuoso performances.

    McCall doesn't count, man.

  16. Jimmy

Jimmy The Greatest of Are Times

    It counts to me.

Lewis always avenged a loss by picking apart his opponent. McCall realized this, thus resulted in him giving up and crying like a sissy. :l1:

It qualifies for the same reason the Rahman fight does.

Lewis was not accountable for McCalls drug or mental issues.

All Lewis knew was that this guy had a great chin, had knocked him out, taken his title, and was tipped to do so again.

Lewis did his thing and resurrected his career.

Is it the sort of fight I like to watch?? No....because McCall was clearly not all there. He was an iron-chinned neurotic addict to the eviscerated Cleveland Williams.

But none of that counts against Lewis.

Lewis is my boy, but I thought he looked pretty stiff and ordinary vs. McCall.

  19. Jimmy

Jimmy The Greatest of Are Times

He was pushing his jab out instead of really stepping into it I suppose from observing Lewis' performance vs McCall in the rematch. He was dominant, but hard to really take away anything from it as McCall gave up.

Still not really sure McCall's behavior had anything to do with Lewis.

he was smoking cooked cocaine during training camp.

McCall came into the ring vs Maskaev in a similar state, but was able to get rid of Maskaev early. Lewis on the other hand was at least able to perform in such a fashion as to drag the fight out and ensure the timely deterioration of Olivers already fragile state. Oliver maybe have been screwy, but it was still going to take some degree of effort and staying-power to get the job done.

    mikE "Twinkle Toes" McJack

'Jesse' James Hughes is the guy who comes to mind when I think of this type of fighter. For anyone not familiar with him I would recommend buying his career on dvd and just watching it from start to the end without taking a look at the outcome of any fight beforehand. He personified tough.

    mikE "Twinkle Toes" McJack

My favorite type of fight is where one of my favorite fighters wins against one of my least favorite fighters. It doesn't matter if the win is close, a blowout, controversial, or undeserved. Just win, baby.

mcCall did waste maskaev. wasnt that maskaevs pro debut:scratcher:

  26. Slice N Dice

Slice N Dice Big stiff idiot

I actually thought McCall was giving Lennox a good go of it until the breakdown

I think, off the top of my head, it was his 8th pro fight.

Checking now....it was his 7th pro fight and his first loss.

In his 12th pro fight, he fought Tua.

In his 20th pro fight, he fought Rahman.

    Damn......

  28. Lots of knockdowns and drama but with a high skill level.

    Tito-Vargas is the template.

My enjoyment of fights also has alot to do with the stakes involved: how important the fight is.

  29. Irish

    Irish Yuge, Beautiful

Christ...they are all important. To be defeated is to be truly nobody.

  30. AH...so you must have loved Calzaghe-Lacy then!
