well, what's the agenda then? you yourself emphatically agree the 1981 list is vastly superior, so what is the agenda?

Yes. Good post. If you posted like this more often, I would have less of a headache.

Like I said in my original post...I WANT the sport to be better these days. But I also refuse to pretend it's something that it's not.

And to be honest...a lot of fans also do their share of sugar coating.

Slowly, slowly back away from the cdogg kneepads and let Cdogg handle this argument with Jaws. Last I checked he's doing well on his own...

I wish some of you guys could have experienced that era while it was happening. It really was an awesome time to be a fan.

Slowly back away from this topic and start yet another one where you are sucking Mayweather's balls...since that's all you are good for.

    Anyway...

I agree that boxing is annoying these days and particularly frustrating in that we don't have enough young exciting stars and the old great stars (Pac May) haven't fought each other to date.

Too much money and politics these days.

Still I wont give up on this sport...and I'm still excited for certain matchups.

"Douche" is such a stupid/juvenile word. No wonder you enjoy using it.

Truthfully I have the odd disagreement with many posters here, but you're the only one that I genuinely dislike.

I'm 10 years older than you, roughly, and I live with my woman; why don't you try actually confronting ME, back up your accussations, instead of resorting to chickenshit like the above

I mean, seriously, you trying to get on THAT train is absurd, with your dunking video and your agitated praying mantis heavybag routine, you owned yourself with that crap... dressing up FreeIke like a gimp in your mom's bedroom

Seriously, fag, point out all of this alleged praising of 1920s fighters that I supposedly do, and then tell Ramonza who has experienced the exact opposite with me

The 1981 era was without a doubt greatly superior. It's not even debatable. Hell, I think that you could take the 2nd and 3rd from 1981 and it would still be superior to 2011.

still, BWJ, you're taking this too emotinonally. Irish point made a lot of sense, and he even acknowledge that it's not probable that the state of the game will improve soon.

Fans are suckers. Fans like to be treated with slick, glossy productions. OMG did you see 24/7? Floyd is a bad ass. "OMG did you see Face-Off, Pac is going to smash that bwoy".

Why did HBO do Wlad vs Haye? Because Haye brought the sexy. Haye brought the "Karizmer".

    Its bogus.

There are other issues. In the 1950's, nobody really knew what Pugilistica Dementia was. They called it "being punchy". We are at the other end of a different extreme, an extreme where Hollywood could comfortably make big-time motion pictures "exposing" the fight-game. Guys were contracted so that if , as was the case with Johnny Summerlin, " they sold a bottle a pop", their manager would get a piece.

You had shit-box ghettos pumping out moderately talented fighters BUT LOTS OF THEM, which forced the #1 contender to really be a contender and forced the champ to really be a champ. The sheer competition for places and the sheer rip-off nature of the game forced people to work harder.

But today when nobody wants to be the next Gerard McClellan, when people are showing up on TV with the pants half-hanging of their ass and talking 'bout they signing on-fee {Ricky Williams} its easy to see why the game is weakening badly.

Then you got another problem with boxing. Snobbery. Exclusivity. With the MMA, they don't care if you are a truncated, hairy Armenian whose method of winning fights is to fling himself from a distance and land flying headbutts.

But in boxing, despite the every-shallowing pool of talent, you got people like Kellerman and people like HBO, who prefer to shoe-shine the shit out of Vitor vs Floyd rather than spend that money on solid, tape-delayed cards from Europe or elsewhere and show them on standard cable. Oh, we're not interested in those boring fighters. Yeah so why did you show Rahman vs Wlad, you morons???

Did tennis from Europe stop the Williams Sisters from becoming or wanting to become champions? No. Of course not. Get the product out there. Get it up on the screens. Advertise boxing through boxing. The Mob worked like that for years. How did ordinary guys want to become outfit guys? By seeing that life.

Ironically, if you show enough of shitty fighters in good fights, people who might be good fighters would get involved. Thats how Michael Grant got into it. And lets be fair, as limited as he was, he created a bit of noise. A few more Grants across the divisions wouldn't hurt right now. People who saw a fight and decided they could do just as well.

Instead, we have stasis. Instead we have guys who decided that because they don't like the composition of a current division, they will make accusations about steroids, despite the fact that the single biggest fight in the game right now can't get made because of a dispute over same.

It's almost Byzantine. The Turks are at the gates and nobody cares, because they have a score to settle first.

And in the meantime, the UFC/MMA combine is steadily drawing in every angst-ridden, spotty, Papa-Roach listening to freak, or the steroid monkey from the gym, or the guy who couldn't string sausages together never mind punches, because the MMA doesn't care, it is a broad Church and it holds all sorts. While this is going on, HBO and friends are stood on the door of Club Boxing saying "sorry, you can't get in, try next door"

Did Jaws put a video up on the internet of himself rattling shots off into a 30lb canvas bag a while back?

This is a good point from another perspective too: boxing in the 80s was more main stream than it is now, just like track and field. In track and field we now have guys like David Rudisha who would destroy the likes of Coe, Ovett, Cram etc. but how many sports fans have even heard of him. There is Thorkildsen, Blake, Farah, Tamgho who would have been greats at any era, yet they lack the media attention that the stars of 80s had.

I think the same is going on in boxing. There are champs and contenders who would be either champions or contenders at any era. It is not long ago I watched fights between contenders of 70s and 80s (bouts like Chuvalo-Quarry, Wepner-Bobick, Thomas-Tubbs etc). I am not sure if there is much, if any, difference compared to the fights between contenders of now. The status of the fights is vastly different, not the actual skill level.

And no, I am not saying that boxing is at its best now. The list of champs from early 80s is a really impressive one and it could well be that most of them would take over if they appeared now. I just think that the difference between eras behind this absolute top is not as big as it is made out to be: what we lack now are those superfights, since media isn't interested anymore.

Also, it is very difficult to tell if the sport has changed and how much, meaning, how well Amir Khan etc. would do in some other era. But I won't get into that now

Some good points on both sides here but, whilst I generally rail against the whole 'boxing is shit/boxing is dying' tirade some try to force down our necks, there is no doubt in my mind that the state of the game today is probably as bad as it has been in my lifetime. Maybe not necessarily at the very top; the likes of Mayweather, Manny, JMM and Vitali IMO would be at worst competitive in any era, but beyond the very best there is very little indeed. Very little.

The depth is non existent, but frankly, events in the 1980's played their role in that. The rot is well established.

Yeah I know. That's not a problem. A leak in a boat is not a problem if you remember to stuff a rag in it, bail out the water, and make for shore.

The problem is that we got Jim and Max and the boys floating around up to their tits in flotsam, declaring that all is well, and that there are no sharks circling.

Rios will be a punching bag before all of Pac, Floyd, Vitali and Sergio are gone.

Seriously man, DeGale is not that good.

I do, however, look forward to watching the careers of Gamboa and Donaire (especially) unfold.
