I thought Mayorga beat Spinks. I like Spinks just fine, but Mayorga isn't really like Margarito. Mayorga is all reckless pressure. Margarito is far more composed pressure.

I realize most think Spinks beat Mayorga. Fine. I think Spinks and Margarito are fairly evenly matched at their best. However, I think their actual fights wouldn't be that close....if Spinks wins, he makes Margarito look slow and plodding, and if Margarito wins, he makes Spinks look weak and probably blasts him out.

Why don't you go look at Leonard's record, his actual fights, and explain why Margarito would fall into the ~66% of opponents that Leonard ko'd and not the 33% that he didn't.

Leonard wasn't a power puncher, he was a master boxer and a master fighter. He wouldn't have fucked around trying to ko Margarito, he would have stayed back and beat him from a distance.

How many months has it been since you've made a substantive post?

Leonard had one of the all-time great left hooks, IMO. He may have not been a freakish Hearns/Cuevas-like puncher, but he hit pretty hard, and was one of the best finishers the sport has seen.

I can definitely see him stopping Margarito on accumulated punishment to the body and head.

Yeah, lot's of people thought Mayorga's constant coming forward and throwing punches were winning him rds. It didn't really seem to matter to those people that although Spinks may have been on the back foot most of the fight, he was the one slipping and dodging most of Mayorga's shots while countering with his own. So I was really pissed by the amount of people who thought Mayorga won that fight.

I was poisoned and unpoisoned for that fight.
I was poisoned because I was at it live and didn't have great seats. Everyone in my section thought Margarito [edit: Mayorga] deserved it.

I was unpoisoned because I didn't have to listen to HBO licking Spinks every second of the fight.

When I rewatched it on tape shortly after, I still thought Mayorga won, but that's not exactly a fair metric.

I was at the fight too,Back seats at ringside but out of range to hear a broadcast. It was a close fight, I am not a big Spinks fan but I thought he won. I believe that was part of the Don King event that was awesome, with Bernard as the main event. I actually met Tyson and took pics with him in one of the entryways to the ring. I was so excited as I love Mike.. He was applauded more than any great there that night when he entered the Hall.. Was that not an awesome night of boxing? Packed to the max plus some. One of the best events of the past decade in AC including all of Gatti's fights. GS

Yeah but none of the likes of Cotto, Cintron, or Santos hit anything close to a Sugar Ray Leonard.

Plus as wide open as Margarito is, he wouldn't stand up for too long to Leonard's shots.

    Leonard hit harder than Mosley.

    And had more killer instinct/meaness.

He'd fight him like he fought Green and put full commitment on his punches.

I suspect that what happenned to Wlad in the first Brewster fight, also happenned to Margarito against Shane,.. a tickle to the pancreas.
