After last weekend's fiasco I thought it'd be nice for all us all to watch some proper Light Heavyweight action.

My word, what a beast he was. Looked like a fantastic, technical boxer with power to spare.

    Excellent stuff Hut.

One of the best jabbers I've ever seen. Always on balance, can throw with either hand at any time, move or pivot either way fluidly, defend punches economically without sacrificing the ability to fire back, perfect gauge of range. Damn. Like a young Bernard Hopkins, except better.

I shall watch a few of his fights over the weekend. Did he improve towards the end of his career?

I wouldn't say so no, he was ranked highly and in title contention for most years of his career. I won't profess to be an expert on it's trajectory though.

Gotta be a top 10 175lb great though. Went 1-3 with Archie Moore, holds a SD over a past peak Ezzard Charles and also beat Jimmy Bivens & Doug Jones. An absolute golden era for lightheavyweights.

Would kick the shit out of a 46 year old Hopkins with rich glottal slurps and no remorse. A master technician.

From the looks of him, he'd be the Man to beat today at light Heavy.

I certainly think so. I think he'd be right in the p4p discussion with the welterweight shite bags and Nonito.

Johnson is one of the most skilled fighters that ever breathed... He was vexed somewhat by Archie, but his overall body of work is outstanding... If you were a top ranked guy between 170 and 190 pounds between 1950 and 1965, you fought Johnson and you probably lost

Incidentally, that Pastrano fight was very controversial, scorewise... a lot of folks still think Johnson should have gotten the nod... Pastrano was a dancer all the way, jab and move all night, never committed to anything he didn't have to and Johnson was forced to be the aggressor, which was not his forte

Sorry...he has 11 career losses, which means he couldn't have been that good.

Johnson was an outstanding fighter and was always willing to take on the best around.

he lost to some guy called Archie Moore who had, at the time, SEVENTEEN LOSSES!!!!!!

He did beat Lothar Stengel, who was 13-0, so that is a quality win

Who would you rank higher P4P, Stengel or Luis Primera?

  17. cdogg187

    cdogg187 GLADYS

clearly, both are legends... but since Primera was 15-0, as opposed to 13-0, he is clearly better

I've never seen either guy fight but came to same conclusion.

I tell you, this rating fighters by W-L record alone is WAY easier than actually knowing a thing about them. I think we should all adopt this genius method.

Actually seeing the fighters fight can only lead to nostalgia...

  23. cdogg187

    cdogg187 GLADYS

true... nostalgia is the reason all of us think Ray Leonard at a paltry 36-3 is better than Amir Khan who has suffered but one defeat
