The 185lb Rock vs the 220lb Mercer.

    What happens?

Marciano wins a decision 100 times out of 100, that's what.

    no.

Size matters not in this one. Mercer will lose.

Again....size ALLLLLWAYS matters. Always, always, always.

That said, it's not unfeasible that Rocky guts out a close decision here. Mercer ain't that much naturally bigger.

The size difference is not that small, but people are likely to overstate it. Marciano trained DOWN in size, and not just a little either, whereas Mercer was bloated and overweight his entire career (it probably cost him the Lewis fight).

Anyway, I have a pretty hard time seeing anything other than a Marciano decision.

I just don't see a 188 pound guy with a style that relied heavily on his strength and ferocity being able to handle a 220-230 immovable object like Mercer... it doesn't matter that Marciano was a far better fighter anymore than it matters that Ezzard Charles was far better than Wlad Klitschko

He beat some similarly-sized guys comparable in ability, CDogg.

Its not like this is Tyson (who would devastate Marciano), we're talking about Mercer. I cant imagine Marciano ever becoming a victim of Jesse Ferguson. This is a bruising war and Ive gotta give it to the busier, harder-hitting, better-conditioned guy.

The size difference isnt that small, but realistically, it just isnt that big, either.

word. Ramonza nailed it with this point.

Marciano would outwork Mercer every day of the week and twice on Sundays. Mercer will not be able to hurt Marciano enough to stop him.

Mercer isn't that hard of a puncher...he certainly didn't punch any harder than Walcott. Marciano will take the punches and throw far more in return.

Mercer is absolutely monstrous in bulk compared to anyone Rocky was in there with and Rocky style is a pressure style... he has to be able to impose his strength on his opponent... I can not see him doing so on a granite-jawed guy who is collossal by comparison

I don't want anyone to think I am being disrespectful of Marciano, here... There are but a handful of guys between 180-200 who could beat him... he was a ferocious beast of a fighter... but size is important... When you are trying to push around a big guy like that, you get worn down

I'm torn between both view points here. Mercer does have 30lb here and size is a key variable for the reasons cdogg gives....but at the same time it isn't the 30lb of natural size that fully translates to frame size and strength. There is a difference. And like Sly says if Rocky can survive in the pocket without getting man handled he will out hustle Mercer. Marciano was very, very accurate and punched hard enough to get even Mercer's respect.

    It's an interesting one.:dunno:

I just can't see him surviving in the pocket... I do believe he gets pushed around

He's 50 times the fighter Mercer is, but he's so much smaller

Who cares? Pacquiao was so much smaller than Margarito. I didn't see Marg pushing him around.

    Easy fight to predict.

Pacquiao uses speed and movement. Marciano comes straight ahead and fights head on chest trying to grind his opponents down to pieces.

Mercer's jab would dictate the action and with his strength he could push Marciano back, which takes plenty away from Rocky's effectiveness. Also, Marciano could be hurt despite legends (Archie Moore knocked him down and hurt him bad).

All respect to Marciano, but Mercer is just too good

I knew the size issue would be in play, when really it just isnt what many make it out to be.

Mercer spent his entire career significantly overweight. He wasnt muscle-bound (though a muscular guy), the truth is he just carried too much flab. A Mercer who trained DOWN, for extreme cardio, would not be much beyond 200lbs. By contrast, Marciano couldve weighed around 200 and still been in formidable condition --- he was THAT maniacal about his endurance.

It isnt as though Mercer was Tyson, who was a ripped 220...Mercer is a decent stretch more muscular than Marciano, a WHOLE lot fatter, and not half the puncher. This isnt a Sumo contest, its a Boxing match. And Marciano was three times the boxer Mercer was.
