Mercer was shite. When will people realize this. I don't care if he had 50 lbs on Marciano...he wouldn't win. All that size difference means nothing because he wouldn't be able to KO Marciano or even hurt him badly.

Next y'all will be saying that Butterbean beats Marciano because of the 150lb size difference.

Based on what? Archie Moore hurt Marciano badly and Ezzard Charles almost ripped his face off. Marciano was gutsy, but he could be hit, despite the glorification of his 'subtle defense'.

There is a reason why we haven't had a 185 lbs heavyweight contender in 50 years, much less one whose main tactic is to come forwards and chop his opponent down. There is also a reason why this fight might not even be sanctioned now.

    Weight difference is overrated.

The reason we have weight classes in boxing isn't so much because 20 lbs heavier translates to being better per se, but to seperate men that are clearly of a different natural size from each other...but with similar skillsets. It's therefore unfair for the similarly skilled Roy Jones and Floyd Mayweather to be fighting each other since one is naturally much bigger than the other.

    however

History has shown us time and time again that a smaller fighter that is much better will beat the bigger fighter who has size as the only advantage 99 out of 100 times.

    Louis-Carnera, Dempsey-Firpo, Dempsey-Willard, Louis-Galento, Pacquio-Margarito, Holmes-Butterbean, Holyfield-Foreman, Tyson-Bruno/Ruddock/Tubbs/Tucker/Thomas/Holmes etc.

Mercer has NOTHING on Marciano except size. Nothing. No Thing. Not a thing. Nada. Null. Nill. Nought. Zero. Blank. Love. Zip.

Marciano beats him every day of the week.

Myth. Mercer had by far the better jab. He had the better chin. He probably had as good a punch (although Mercer's punch might be overrated, so is Rocky's who was mostly an accumulation puncher). Their speed is about equal. There is not much difference in their movement.

Rocky's clear advantages were ability to throw more and to always be in shape. Otherwise he didn't have much over Ray. And even if size doesn't mean that much, stylistically a bigger guy should be one to give trouble for a guy who tries to walk through his opponent. Marciano never actually beat a good big guy.

    Marciano never lost.

Mercer may have a better jab, but it's irrelevant since Mercer's style wasn't to control fights with him jab. Better chin? Sure. But so what? Chins will not decide this fight since Mercer wasn't a scary puncher. If Mercer's punch was so strong he would have surely KOd 100 year old Larry Holmes. Rocky was CLEARLY the harder puncher.

Ruddock was much bigger than Tyson, Tyson tried to walk though him. Tyson never legitimately stopped Ruddock but he was always clearly winning the fights.

Reading this thread is making me realize that Ramonza is the converse of the guys on here who think all fighters before 1980 were crap.

    Mercer would beat Marciano down..

he shouldnt be taken seriously. there are plenty of guys who were excellent fighters, from the past 20 years, who he has barely seen in action.

Is it your usual MO to lie about people on here Neil, or do you make exceptions for De La Hoya fans?
