Temple shots are freak occurrences in the sport and in careers, mate, simple as that. It's like losing via a cut. But lets just agree that Solis should go and prove himself with a couple of decent wins to make him relevant again, if he can.
Christ. Does anyone here know what it must feel like to get smacked on the top of the head by a 250lb guy whose punches make noise when they land?? Solis got hurt because he got tagged coming in, he tried to back up but the "dance" that all fighters do when they get hurt caused him to lose his footing and damage his leg. He was clipped cleanly and the replay shows his head being snapped from side-to-side, always the worst direction. He'd never been hurt like that before, backed up in a hurry and hurt himself. No real mystery there. Solis wasn't in "rubbish condition". He wasn't ripped but that doesn't mean a damned thing. He showed fast hands and crisp punching and moved quite well. He looked more than competent and quite comfortable in there. Personally I don't want to see a rematch because Solis needs fights to get over the worst of the injury and re-establish himself. Povetkin would be a bloody disaster with Vitali unwilling to risk injury by going all-out, and Povetkin being too tough to submit, just getting pounded into pulp with Shamen Teddy Atlas invoking dead spirits as a sideshow. It says a lot that Vitali at 40 would fuck up a vaunted Olympian but that fight would quite simply degenerate into an awful farce, both during the rounds and between them. Valuev is finished. That would be a slaughter. Valuev is probably in the early stages of some sort of general degrading of his mobility and agility, what little of it he had. Vitali would just tee off. Murdering Haye would be the best bet, but that moron is like a bitch who says she will, then says she won't, then says she will......Haye wants for the brothers to retire, or for Vitali to get old, then he will re-emerge, like the maggot he is.
The division will never be so shallow that a win over Ray Austin makes you a legitimate championship contender.
Well there are 4 belts, so 4 times as many cheap ways as getting in the door. The Austin win made him a WBC #1 contender, which is pretty harmless in the general scheme of Alphabet Belt behaviour. Lets face it, we can think of worse examples where guys got title fights. Howard Clarke, who is currently rotting in a care home in England, got a 1 point victory over some guy called Jason Papillon, which landed him a title shot vs Fernando Vargas at MSG on the undercard of Lewis vs Holyfield, Part I. Whats worse, shit wins getting title shots in shallow divisions, or shit wins getting title shots in stacked divisions?? And where is the cut-off point? When Wlad beat Byrd, the division shallowed in a hurry, but Wlad beat DaVarryl Williamson and Sam Peter to get that shot. This Haitian dude and Oldlanier Solis....do only represent one tranche, one angle, of the broader scene.
Who's arguing against the part in bold? The fact is, Solis wasn't able to go a round with Vitali without getting so hurt that he fell down. I don't care how competent and comfortable he looked for two minutes and fifty seconds. :: And, yes, for a professional boxer he was in AWFUL condition.
:dunno: The extra 15lbs he was carrying don't make for "awful" condition. He responded badly to a shot which probably hit a nerve or shook his brain. This is heavyweights. Vitali hit an insanely well conditioned Danny Williams with a 3 inch left hook and reduced him to jelly. Williams had trained like a maniac for that fight. Sometimes your button just gets pressed. Think Jerry Quarry vs Chuvalo. Chuvalo hits him with a left hook, one single shot, high on the head, and teak-tough Jerry gets counted out. Shit happens.
Right, well lets just leave it at that. No need to invoke "shallowness of division" arguments. Undeserving guys get undeserved shots in strong divisions, average divisions, weak divisions. Ironically, it is in weaker divisions where their getting shots is of less outrage. Solis was at least a former World Amateur Champ, which should have been a fast-track to a world title shot in any case.
I assume you're having a laugh. Guy is a total slob - happens often with these Cubans, they're no longer forced to train that hard... they start enjoying life off the island. He wasn't in good shape. No need to make anything up. That shot probably always hurts him no matter what kind of condition he's in, but you can certainly make an argument that his knee doesn't give out if he's in shape.
And we obviously have different standards when it comes to conditioning if you're going to use 6'3, 270 pound Danny Williams as an example of a boxer in insanely good shape.
That guys legs are probably 2-3X stronger than yours or mine. He isn't morbidly obese. He can probably squat 500 for fun. He got hurt, and fell. People get hurt and fall all the time. I've known fat fucks who fell down 3 flights and laughed it off. He did his knee after being clipped. Jerry Quarry was 190 and squatted down listening to a 10 count come and go and didn't know what was going on. As I say, sometimes you just get your number dialled. People fall awkwardly trying to get out of bed. He fell awkwardly trying to recover from being punched hard in the cranium. Mike Grant was a ripped Adonis and he hurt his ankle off a knockdown. As I say, shit happens. Why didn't Chris Arreola break both legs when Vitali hit him :dunno: As for being soft off the island, sure, I agree. If I was on soup and lentils from age 0 to age 20 I'd probably let myself go later on if I got the chance. But its not like Solis was any softer than JC Gomez.
Nobody is a bigger critic of fat heavyweights than me but the fact remains Solis showed more ability in one round than we've seen from the vast majority of challengers recently and I'm more curious about what he could do in a rematch than I am abut seeing most the realistic alternatives. Simple as that.....then we can all find out whether it was a freak temple shot or he is just chinny. Probably the latter but at least there's some question to answer there which is why match ups are made.
What about Yuri Foreman? He's a slob too??? I'm no Solis apologist....I just don't think everyone who falls and hurts themselves deserves the title of slob.
Guys who show up at professional boxing matches with guts that would make Homer Simpson proud do, however.
