Knock-out Artists who didn't punch particularly hard...

A common point of clarification is the fact that many knock-outs, possibly most, come not as a result of a punch that is thrown particularly hard, but rather one that is delivered with accuracy (on the chin) and by surprise.

This implies a fighter need not punch hard in order to score a knock-out.

Of course, this becomes complicated by the fact that fighters who score knock-outs often are immediately labelled as hard punchers.

But if we recognize that scoring knock-outs and punching hard are two different things, can we identify fighters who score frequent knock-outs but who don't punch particularly hard?

I think Sergio Martinez might be one. He doesn't punch particularly hard in my opinion, but I think he's talented at scoring knock-outs because of his honed power delivery system.

    pr {knock-out} = a * power delivery system index + b * power generation index

If we are going by KO percentage than Vitali has to be up there.

Difficult to answer this, but one guy that comes to mind is Kendall Holt, but I may be wrong.

Mosley's a weird one. Certainly not a knockout artist but plenty of power to hurt. However if you just saw the knockout replays of Vargas and Mayorga you'd think he had Tyson like left hook.

Ah forget it. Too complicated a formula when you also add unknown quantities of drugs or alcohol into the mix.

    Something for Stephen Hawking.

    David Haye.

Haye didn't really punch all that hard, but had this reputation as a murderous 1-hitter-quitter.

    He had some hand-speed and good timing which he used to take guys by surprise and get KO's over guys who weren't that strong or sturdy {Maccarinelli} or who were quite shopworn {Ruiz, Barrett} or who were just plain fecal matter in the first place {Harrison}

At 200, he couldn't get rid of an ancient Carl Thompson, despite hitting him with the kitchen sink in the first 3 rounds and despite Carl having been decked by Chris Eubend some 7 years earlier and knocked down and stopped by Johnny Nelson a short while later. Thompson was utterly shot and Haye couldn't put him away. Bums like Bonin and Gurov went over but Gurov had been beaten up by Mormeck years before that and Bonin had been beaten by, wait for it, Harrison.

Ironically, Haye emerged from 12 rounds of posturing and jabbing vs Valuev with his reputation as a "KO Artist" confirmed, ostensibly off the back of compressing a vein in Valuevs neck with his left-forearm in the 12th round, causing Valuev to do a chicken dance for 2 or 3 seconds. This, we were told, was proof of Hayes "Vaunted" power.

Haye wasn't really able to box to win. Once he fought Wlad, we saw that. He relied on power he didn't really have and landed his Sunday punch and still didn't hurt Wlad too badly.

Haye relied on combination shots against chinny dudes or shopworn guys. He never really was a 1 punch KO artist. Barrett was totally shot, the guy fell getting into the ring, he was borderline brain-damaged, and Haye still needed multiple knockdowns to get rid of the guy.

Haye for me. A vaunted KO artist as much out of desperation as anything else.

holt punches hard as fuck but doesnt set his punches up well, has a low output, is a mediocre finisher. example of the exact opposite.

Mosley is a good example of a guy who relies on mustard for power generation.

    mustard, meaning he swings hard

Yeah. He uses his strength, and throws like he's trying to hit a home-run in baseball.

This constrasts sharply with the power that's generated by a guy like RJJ (speed), Antonio Cervantes (leverage), or JL Castillo (heavy-handedness).

  27. Ok.

RJJ is just speed? That's silly. Meldrick taylor has ridiculous speed. Speed alone doesn't generate power.

  28. Double L

    Double L Book Reader

Nobody said speed alone generates power. But applied with an effective power delivery system (pds), which means superior timing and accuracy, and indeed, speed alone can generate power.

But you're correct in that no fighter relies solely on a single power generation method (pgm) to hurt his opponent. However, it's possible that recognizing that some fighters rely on certain methods more than others provides for a useful classification of punching power.

Obviously, RJJ relies to some extent on the mass of his hands (heavy-handedness), mustard and leverage. But what made him stand out and be deadly was the speed with which he delivered punches, just as Foreman's punching was exceptional due to his heavy-hands. But the point isn't that fighters rely on one and only one power generation method, but rather that in many cases, some of the sport's best punchers can be distinguished by their mastery and exploitation of particular power generation methods.

    pds + mustard (x-y=4) - Gauze * mustard (E=gauze + plaster) / pds + pgm = power quotient
