Pre-Leonard 2 Duran here... Duran would bully Forrest in a more skilled and sophisticated way than what Mayorga was able to do, and beat the shit outta him down the stretch. Duran TKO 11
Agreed. If a crude Mayorga could get past Vernon's jab and right hand clearly Duran could as well. That's not to say that Roberto would knock out Forrest quicker. Duran loved to war it out but he wasn't as wreckless. Once Duran got the timing right he'd be all over Forrest like white on rice and the stoppage would come soon after.
Again, weight ins etc. Forrest is effectively a Junior Middleweight. And a tall, rangey one. It's a hard fight for Duran. On his game I think he manages a close decision, but Mayorga had advantages in size and strength which Duran can't apply. Duran was a good junior middleweight but not so good that he could dominate a guy like Vernon.
Prime Forrest jabs and uppercuts a narrow decision victory as Duran is troubled by a guy who can clinch as effectively as himself
Lets me just submit that there's a massive difference between offensive (active) mauling and defensive (come break us up, ref, while I make sure we stand here doing nothing) clinching. The former is a form of messy infighting, the latter a way to escape fighting. And Duran did neither nearly as much as you bleat on about.
Duran just offends Ugo's cool, pleasant Nordic sensibilities. Don't be mad that he's free in all the ways you can't be. :mj:
Why couldn't he do it against Mayorga?? Duran is more skillful and quicker than Mayorga and he 'd just work Forrest over.
Disagreed. Both are a way to gain an advantage to win a fight. One might be more astethically pleasing or show more the spirit somebody likes, but the ruling should be the same. Excessive clinching is against the rules (all clinching is not). Whether a tall guy clinches to keep the exchange situations outside or a short guy clinches to prevent the other guy taking distance, I don't see a difference.
Correct, Mayorga's strength troubled Forrest up close, he couldn't clinch as effectively as he likes to. Also, I think Forrest deserved the decision
Can you show me some clips where you feel Duran was clinching excessively? Preferably not from fights where he was over 35 years old. What he certainly didn't do much was what say Tyson, Hatton & Bradley today does which is practically leap in with punches then hold on until the ref broke the action. He would grapple a bit, repositioning opponents arms etc and sometimes clinches would arise (initiated by the other guy most of the time) which he would generally fight his way out of or try to, but there was not allot of holding on, or breaks in the action. It was all fighting.
Ugo needs to stop schisming off his red meme and embrace the elemental rhythm of Duran and his sexy bobbing do. Transcend and integrate bro, it's all a big holography. The lizard's still in there doing it's job for you, nah'm sayin'?
I like Duran in this, frankly... Forrest isn't Tommy Hearns... He's tall, he clinches, he has a jab, but he's also rather timid, in my eyes, and not overly fast either. I think against a guy who is as capable of slick inside maneuvering and right hand countering as Duran, he's in for a long night. Maybe he's not butchering him, but I think if he's in good shape and in it to win it, on good form, he's got to be favored... Obviously, if Duran is in Kirkland Laing form, he's walking around eating some jabs and missing with rights en route to a one-sided decision loss
