ah, good point, Ali was between championships then

Gomez put up a great fight there... especially considering a fracture to his cheekbone and his eyes swollen almost completely shut

Julio Cesar Chavez TKO10 Sammy Fuentes, 11-18-1989 ... Fuentes was a hard-punching, respectable journeyman who defeated former Chavez victim Rodolfo Aguilar to earn a shot at Chavez's title... To his credit, he came out gunning for it, throwing lots of hard punches, really giving it his all... The fight was reasonably competetive for the first 4 rounds but Chavez, as always, began to warm up and the fight become a typically brutal and clinical vintage Chavez battering... Fuentes was repeatedly made to miss with a series of shots before being hammered again and again by a barrage of clean and heavy shots... He never stopped trying to fight back, even as his legs were turning to jelly, his eye was swelling and he was spitting blood from his mouth... After the 10th, the ringside physician ordered the bout terminated, but I have no doubt that Fuentes would have kept on trying

I remember an interview with Cobb where he said something to the effect of "The thing about Shavers is fighters like Norton, Dokes and Mercado hit me like Shavers once or twice when we fought but Shavers hit like Shavers every damned time..."
